It’s official. Quinn Hughes is etched in the Vancouver Canucks history books as he broke the franchise record for points by a defenceman on Thursday night against the Calgary Flames.
Hughes got his record passing point by backpedaling out of danger and finding Brock Boeser in the slot. Boeser scoops the puck around an Oilers defender while under pressure and snapped the puck through the legs of Calvin Pickard.
Hughes tied the record in Game 81 of last season against the San Jose Sharks, picking up the secondary assist on Jake DeBrusk’s overtime winner:

The previous record was held by Alex Edler, who scored 99 goals and 310 assists for 409 points through his 925 games with the franchise. Hughes managed to eclipse his totals in just his 434th game with the Canucks. Hughes (59) sits 40 behind Edler in goals, but far surpassed him in assists (350), now leading by 41.
Hughes managed to tie the milestone despite missing 14 games throughout last season due to various injuries. The magic number to get it done in 2024-2025 was 77, and but was unable to grab that point in Game 82 against the Vegas Golden Knights. Despite missing all those games, Hughes still led the Canucks in points by a healthy amount. Boeser finished with 50 points, Conor Garland with 49 and Jake DeBrusk with 48 points on the season.
The eldest Hughes brother had a career campaign in 2023-2024. Hughes set career highs in goals (17), assists (75) and points (92) in his first complete 82-game season. His efforts earned him the James Norris Memorial Trophy, the first in Canucks franchise history, and now, owns the record for most points by a Canucks blueliner in franchise history.
We originally wrote this article on April 16, ahead of the final game of the season anticipating Hughes would break it last season – but he just had to make us wait until Game 2 of this season.
