The Vancouver Canucks (9-11-2) look to snap a two-game losing streak when they host the Calgary Flames (7-13-3) in a 6 pm start at Rogers Arena.
The Canucks have been idle since a 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday, while the Flames beat the Stars 3-2 in a shootout last night.
What we know
The Canucks elected to stay off the ice this morning, so it will be closer to game time before head coach Adam Foote confirms his lineup. Kevin Lankinen is expected to make his second straight start in goal. Veteran defenceman Filip Hronek was excused from practice on Saturday due to illness; however, Foote expected Hronek to be available to play tonight.
If the Canucks lineup looks like it did at yesterday’s practice, Jake DeBrusk will skate on a line with Elias Pettersson and Evander Kane. DeBrusk has scored in five of the team’s last seven games, while Pettersson’s goal against Dallas extended his goal streak to two games (3G) and his point streak to five games (4+5). Pettersson logged a season-high 24:43 in Thursday’s loss. Meanwhile, Kane, who is second on the team with 63 shots this season, has now gone seven games without a goal.
Brock Boeser needs a single point to move into the top 10 in all-time Canucks scoring. Heading into tonight’s game, Boeser has 448 points in 574 games and sits one point back of Todd Bertuzzi, who currently holds down the 10th spot. Boeser is expected to play on a line with David Kämpf and Conor Garland tonight. Aatu Räty will have Drew O’Connor and Kiefer Sherwood on his wings, while Max Sasson is expected to centre the fourth line between Mackenzie MacEachern and Linus Karlsson, who scored his third goal of the season on Thursday.
The Canucks have scored a power play goal in six straight games. They are 8-for-23 (34.7%) over that span. Only four teams in the league have scored more than the 17 goals the Canucks have scored with the man advantage this season.
It’s been a week since the Canucks beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2. With no points since last Sunday, the team has dropped to a tie for 29th in the overall standings ahead of only the Flames and Nashville Predators. A big part of that is a troubling home record, which now stands at 3-6-1. They are 0-2-1 in their last three outings on home ice. The Canucks have just two regulation wins at home this season – 5-1 against Calgary on opening night and 4-3 over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
After tonight, the Canucks head out on a four-game road trip to visit all three California teams plus the Colorado Avalanche. They’ll return home to host the Utah Mammoth on December 5th.
The Opponent
The Flames arrive in town after back-to-back wins in Buffalo on Wednesday and last night at home to Dallas. Matt Coronato and Joel Farabee scored power play goals in regulation time, while Nazem Kadri sealed the victory in a shootout. Devin Cooley made 28 saves for his second straight victory. With games on consecutive nights, Dustin Wolf is expected to get the call tonight.
Despite struggling mightily this season, the Flames roll into Vancouver with a 3-1-1 record over their past five games and are a respectable 5-4-1 in their last 10.
Calgary is the lowest-scoring team in the league, averaging 2.26 goals per game. Matt Coronato surged into the team lead with his eighth goal of the season last night, while Blake Coleman has seven. They’re the only players on the team with more than five goals so far this season. Nazem Kadri leads the club with 16 points.
The Flames have the 30th-ranked power play (14.1%), and Coronato has scored five of the team’s 11 goals with the man advantage. That said, they went two for six against the Stars last night – just the second time all season they have managed multiple power play goals in a game.
On Tuesday, the Flames claimed centre John Beecher off waivers from Boston. He has played a pair of games since the transaction and is still looking for his first point with Calgary.
The Flames are embarking on a unique road trip that starts in Vancouver tonight and then continues to Tampa Bay, Florida, Carolina and Nashville. They are in the midst of a stretch of their schedule that has them playing seven of eight games on the road.
News and notes
Filip Chytil scored two of his three goals this season in a 5-1 opening night win over the Flames. The Canucks had Chytil, Jonathan Lekkerimäki, Braeden Cootes, Derek Forbort and Thatcher Demko in their lineup that night. The Canucks will make their lone visit of the season to the Saddledome on March 28th.
The referees for tonight’s game are Francois St. Laurent and Brandon Blandina.
