Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson was officially logged off.
Not on the ice, he’s starting to round back into form that earned him an eight-year $11.6 million per season contract after a tough start to the season. But the Swedish forward had a recent interview with Gunnar Nordström of the Expressen, sharing that he is officially off social media.
The interview is translated by PapaPandroni on Reddit.
“I have removed all my social media,” Pettersson admitted. “Which is nice because I’m not walking around wasting time on scrolling the internet. I also get more done at home. It’s very nice not to read and check Instagram. I live my life and try to turn my season around.”
Pettersson became a big talking point to start the year as he struggled out of the gate. He recorded just one goal and four points through his first 10 games of the season. For context, through his first 10 games of last season, Pettersson had five goals and 19 points.
While it’s clear the 26-year-old centreman is not playing to the level he set for himself through the first six years of his career, he’s well aware of his struggles but optimistic that he’ll be able to turn things around.
“It hasn’t been the best start for me, but the only thing I can control is my own effort, and if I work hard, the points will come. With good decisions on the ice the points will come.
“Of course it is easy to think about that kind of stuff. I know I haven’t started the season that well; it’s all on me, and I’m just trying to look forward to the next game and play better.”
The controversy stemmed further than Vancouver media, as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman touched on the topic, informing that it wasn’t just Pettersson seeing the chatter but that his friends were sending him what everybody was saying about him.
After distancing himself from social media, Pettersson is more focused on the product he’s producing on the ice than what people are saying about him on the internet. He’s showing signs that his season is turning around, as the former fifth-overall pick now has three goals and five points – including two multi-point games – over his previous five games.
The Canucks forward has not posted on Instagram since March 20th, 2024, and has been absent from X/Twitter since 2021.
