@DenikSport

Even when the NHL regular season has concluded for the Vancouver Canucks, they can’t avoid the bad news.
According to Zdenek Janda, a Czech reporter of Denik Sport, Canucks defenceman Filip Hronek was injured in an IIHF World Championship exhibition game for Czechia. Janda shared the news, as well as a quote from the Czech coach, in a social post on X:
“Big complication! Coach Rulík admitted after the game that Michael Spacek is probably done… On top of that, Filip Hronek got injured too. The coach was obviously pissed off at the opponent’s unnecessarily rough play. There’s a question mark over Hronek. ‘I’m afraid it might be something more serious,’ the coach feared.”
In Janda’s postgame article, he shared more details of what happened on the play that injured Hronek:
“Towards the end of the game, Hronek was left lying on the ice after being tackled by Mikael Seppälä. Daniel Voženílek went to avenge him. Worse, the Canucks’ defenseman’s health is a question mark. “I’m worried it might be something more serious,” coach Rulík remained gloomy.”
Janda provided further insight into the chippiness of the contest:
“It was an unlucky moment. In the fifth minute, Aku Räty attacked Czech skater Michael Špaček at the boards, who was hit in the knee. He tried to take two more steps, but the pain was too great, so after a while he fell to the ice. One of the masseurs immediately rushed to him, he was bent over for a long time, then the team doctor Tomáš Vyskočil also came running. Špaček got up after a while, but he could not skate on his own, he limped to the lockers with the help of his teammates. The fans accompanied him by chanting: Míša Špaček. The coaches then had to improvise because they had lost the centers of the second formation. The remaining three centers (Tomášek, Filip and Melovský) were therefore alternating.
“‘He looks bad. I haven’t talked to him yet, but I think he’s done,’ regretted coach Radim Rulík.”
Hronek is coming off a career year with the Canucks, narrowly besting his 2023-24 production with 49 points (eight goals and 41 assists). The right-shot defenceman saw his minutes increase once his long-time defensive partner, Quinn Hughes, was traded, seeing upwards of 30 minutes per night on two occasions. He also took on an additional leadership role, in which he was recognized by Canucks front-office executives as a potential future captain of the team.
The Hradec Králové, Czechia native represented his country at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The Canucks defenceman finished in a tie for second – with Roman Cervenka and David Pastrnak – in points during the tournament, tallying five assists in five games. Hronek played heavy minutes, contributing in all situations for his country.
With Hronek leading the Czechia blueline, his nation finished with a 1-0-1-1 record, which was good for third in Group A. Czechia faced off against Denmark in the qualification playoff round, defeating them 3-2 to advance to a matchup against Canada. Czechia nearly pulled off the massive upset, but dropped the contest 4-3 in overtime off the stick of Mitch Marner.
We do not yet know the extent of the injury. We will update you all here at CanucksArmy as soon as we have more information on Hronek’s status.
