Trade talks are “picking up” on Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser, according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli. Seravalli added that it’s “more likely than not” that Boeser is on the move before the NHL Trade Deadline, which is at noon Pacific Time.
Other reports on Friday morning indicated that the Canucks would be willing to retain on Boeser’s contract, which carries a $6.65 million cap hit and expires at the end of this season.
Boeser has long been in trade rumours after he and the Canucks were unable to come to a contract extension.
With players like Anthony Beauvillier and Andrei Kuzmenko fetching big returns in an obvious seller’s market, it would have been foolish for the Canucks to keep Boeser through the deadline if they knew they weren’t going to be able to sign him to a new contract. Allowing him to walk in free agency would have been reckless, and given what Boeser is likely in line to get on the open market, that was the likeliest outcome if the club elected to keep Boeser through the deadline.
Based on the prices teams are paying for wingers, it will be interesting to see what kind of haul the Canucks are able to pull in for Boeser.
A prior report from Seravalli stated that the Canucks offered Boeser a five-year, $8 million per season contract earlier in the season. Boeser rejected the offer. Further reports came out that the club would make one more offer toward Boeser ahead of the trade deadline, but there has been no word on that to this point.
The Canucks host the Minnesota Wild on Friday evening, and are slated to take to the ice for morning skate at 10:30 AM. We will see if Boeser is on the ice for that.
