We have our first Whalers sighting as on February 7, 1996, the Canucks welcome Hartford to Vancouver. This game started relatively calmly, as Gino Odjick opened the scoring halfway through the first period, and Adrian Aucoin took the only penalty with 19 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
But halfway through the second period was when all hell broke loose.
Dean Malkoc and Kelly Chase got into it along the boards in the Canucks end, before dropping they decided to drop the gloves in front of Corey Hirsch. That fight didn’t last long, however, as Malkoc hit the ice but continued to throw punches at Chase.
With two of the refs occupied trying to split up the two, three Canucks and three Whalers got into it in the corner. Nearly an entire line brawl, Daniels grabs Walker in the corner. Now, it looked more as though Walker was trying to go after another Whaler, but Daniels wouldn’t let him go.
As Tim Hunter and Mark Janssens now go at it, Daniels took this opportunity to start throwing fists with Walker.
Walker was at a deficit, as Daniels (6-foot-3) stood a full five inches taller than Walker (5-foot-10). Daniels catches Walker with a few punches, resulting in Walker ducking down to avoid getting punched. Unfortunately for Walker, that only results in more punches, and he is unable to get into an offensive fighting position.
This leads to more upper-cuts from Daniels, with Walker now having both his hands tied up. As the two skate behind the net, Walker finally throws his first punch, which is just a little jab. The two remained tied up as they skated back into the middle of the ice.
To take away Daniels leverage of grasping onto his jersey, Walker strips his jersey off over his head, and once he finally gets his arm out of his jersey, Walker can officially start fighting back.
Walker does a good job of stripping Daniels’ helmet off, and then connects with an upper-cut, followed by a fury of right hands. The two exchange blows before Walker’s jersey goes over the head of Daniels, where he can now start throwing multiple punches against a defenceless Daniels.
The two continue to whale away at each other before Daniels has Walker bent over, and the refs step in to stop the fight.
The play resulted in six fighting majors, five game misconducts and a total of 82 penalty minutes. Both Walker and Daniels were given two of those game misconducts, and both players were seen leaving the ice physically exhausted after what was a long, hard-fought bout that stretched out to all three zones of the ice.
HockeyFights voters gave this fight an 8.5/10 and favoured Daniels, who earned 50% of the 12 votes. Walker only received 8% of the votes, with 42% calling it a draw.
