It appears that the Canucks and Hartford Whalers did not get along in the 1995-1996 season. In our eighth installment of this series, we covered Scott Walker against Scott Daniels during their line brawl. However, this game is what probably started the hatred between the two teams, as Stojanov and Chase dropped the gloves in their first meeting in Hartford.
As was the case in the later game, it was a slow start for the Canucks and Whalers. The first period ended scoreless, with the Canucks outshooting the Whalers 9-4. But then the rough stuff picked up in the second when Martin Gelinas and Kevin Dineen fought. The Whalers seemed to build energy from the fight, as a young Brendan Shanahan opened the scoring 22 seconds later.
The Whalers would double their lead at the 13:02 mark off the stick of future Canucks Geoff Sanderson. But after that goal, Stojanov tried to give his team a boost and targeted Chase.
The two squared up right off the faceoff. Eyeing each other up for a few seconds, Stojanov grabs the collar of Chase’s jersey and connects with the first few punches before Chase starts throwing them back. And boy, did it ever turn into a rock-em-sock-em type of bout, as both players just connected on punches without slowing down at all.
Once they did slow down, Stojanov ripped off his elbow guard, and Chase attempted to take off his helmet. By doing so, this took Stojanov’s jersey off, which was only bad news for Chase. Once Stojanov’s jersey came off, he continued to whale on the Whaler.
The rock-em sock-em style came back, with both players throwing haymakers. The bout ended shortly after a few more punches were exchanged, and the refs stepped in to stop it.
Unfortunately for Stojanov, his efforts did not spark the Canucks, as they went on to drop this contest 3-0.
HockeyFights voters gave the first fight an 8.5/10 and favoured Stojanov, who earned 50% of the 127 votes. Chase only received 9% of the votes, with 41% calling it a draw.
