It was 29 years ago today that future star Pavel Bure made his NHL debut.

The debut came at home against the Winnipeg Jets, but Bure had a quiet night. His only appearance on the game sheets that night were in thanks to his three shots fired on Jets’ netminder Rick Tabaracci.

Bure’s first NHL point came five days later with an assist against the New York Islanders. The 1989 6th round pick had an electric first season in the league scoring 34 goals and 60 points in 65 games winning the Calder Trophy beating out Nicklas Lindstrom by 40 votes.

In his second and third years, Bure scored 110 and 107 points, respectively, totalling 479 points in 428 games with the Canucks over seven years.

Vancouver later traded Bure to the Florida Panthers in 1999 along with Bret Hedican, Brad Ference and a 2000 3rd round pick in exchange for Ed Jovanovski, Dave Gagner, Mike Brown, Kevin Weekes and Florida’s 1st round choice (Nathan Smith) in 2000 Entry Draft.
