The Safe Picks
1. Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin – There should be no surprise that the twins are your safest fantasy bet. Despite closing in on their 35th birthdays, Henrik and Daniel are not showing any signs of slowing down. Both players finished last year just a few shades under a point-per-game. They’re likely not going to capture back-to-back Art Ross Trophies again but you can likely count on both of them finding their way into the Top 20 for league scoring.
3. Radim Vrbata – After capturing the team’s Cyclone Taylor Trophy and Pavel Bure Award, Vrbata is likely to rekindle his success on the Canucks’ top line. Although Jim Benning says Vrbata will have to battle for his position and may be used to ignite second-line scoring, it can be expected that he will settle in as the team’s third highest point-getter. Even if the talented Czech finds himself on the second line, he has the raw skill to put-up strong numbers again this year.
The Break-out Candidates
4. Bo Horvat – The 9th overall pick from 2013 posted a decent rookie season last year, netting 25 points in 65 games during the regular season and then collecting another four points in just six games during the playoffs. The off-season signing of Brandon Sutter takes the pressure off Horvat, knowing that the team isn’t relying on him to anchor the second unit. That being said, Jim Benning has made it known that there is a place for him on the Canucks second line, if he forces his way on.
Bo Horvat surprised many Canucks fans by making the team as a 19 year-old last year. Don’t be surprised if his encore sees him establish himself as a centerpiece of the Canucks roster a year or two ahead of schedule.
5. Sven Baertschi – After his development slowed in Calgary, the Canucks were able to grab Baertschi for a steal of a deal last year. In his first three games with the big squad, the shifty Swiss forward was able to notch two goals. Although he was held off the scoresheet during his two playoff appearances, Baertschi shouldn’t be underestimated. When your fantasy draft day arrives, you should approach Baertschi as the wild card he is.
For the gambling man in a deep Fantasy league, Baertschi is worth a shot on your roster.
