On Wednesday morning, The Athletic’s Corey Pronman released his rankings of the best U23 NHL players and prospects. The list featured five Vancouver Canucks: two current blueliners and three prospects from their 2026 draft class.
Here is how Pronman described his criteria for his rankings:
“This is a ranking meant to show who I think will have the best NHL careers, not who I would take in a game tomorrow. This is also a good exercise to show how the last five age groups compare to each other, as this largely spans the player pool from the 2022 through 2026 NHL Drafts.
“A player must be 22 years old or younger as of Sept. 15, 2026 to qualify.”
His rankings are broken down into six tiers: Tier 1 – Elite NHL player, Tier 2 – NHL star, Tier 3 – Bubble NHL star and top of the lineup player, Tier 4 – Top of the lineup player, Tier 5 – Bubble top and middle of the lineup player, and Tier 6 – Middle of the lineup player.
The first four tiers consist of just 20 players. The remaining 136 players occupy the last two tiers. Here is where the Canucks prospects found themselves, with Pronman’s analysis:

Tier 5 – Bubble top and middle of the lineup player

23. Caleb Malhotra
Malhotra is a very skilled center who can make a ton of creative plays. He’s fast and attacks with pace. He breaks down opponents one-on-one very well and is a great passer. There’s a minor question about how truly dynamic his offensive game is, but he projects to put up points in the NHL. Malhotra competes hard, showing a detailed two-way game and potential to play difficult minutes as a pro. He projects as an all-around top-six center.”
27. Zeev Buium
“He’s an extremely intelligent puck-mover who can run a power play like a top defenseman. He makes high-end plays routinely and can break shifts open with his puck handling and passes. Buium is a strong skater who can activate off the blue line and create off the rush. He has very good edge work and is proficient at making checkers miss. He has legit offense, but defense will be a minor question. He’s a competitor, but he’s not overly physical and lacks premier footwork to defend at his size. He projects as a top-four defenseman who could be a PP1 type.”

Tier 6 – Middle of the lineup player

72. Tom Willander
“Willander’s skating is his main asset. He has a quick, powerful skating stride and easily gets up the ice. Willander’s high-end skating allows him to close on checks well and be a quality defenseman. He’s not overly physical, but he competes well and is a player coaches will trust even if he was just OK in that area as a rookie. Offensively, he shows some blue-line poise and can make skilled plays with the puck, although I don’t see a true power-play type. He projects as a steady two-way, second-pair defenseman.”
108. Brooks Rogowski
“Rogowski’s tools are easy to see. He’s a huge center who moves very well for his size, has good puck skills and can generate a lot of controlled entries. His playmaking is just OK, and his pure scoring upside will be a point of contention for teams. He creates offense in the hard areas and is a competitive two-way center. He’s a natural athlete, but whether he’s a natural enough scorer will be the question. I think his skill is good enough to be a play-driving middle-six center.”
130. Adam Novotny
“Novotný is a great skater, with the quick burst in his first few steps to pressure even the faster defenders. He has good stick skills. He’s not a natural playmaker, but Novotný has a great shot and can score from the dots and in tight effectively. He works hard enough. Novotný isn’t very physical, but he can be reliable off the puck, and coaches could trust him in a lot of situations. He projects as a top-six winger.”
