The hammer has come down on Los Angeles Kings forward Tanner Jeannot has been suspended three games for his hit to the head on Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser.
Jeannot earned himself an over-the-phone hearing with the head of the Department of Player’s Safety, George Parros, on Friday afternoon, one day after the incident.
If you missed the incident, Brock Boeser picked up the puck in the neutral zone and passes the puck out of danger to Filip Hronek at the Canucks’ blue line. As Boeser watches his pass get completed to Hronek, Jeannot charges at Boeser – Sportsnet tracked that Jeannot travelled 100 feet from when he turned up the ice and headed toward Boeser – and lifts his shoulder and makes direct contact with Boeser’s chin, knocking him straight to the ice. Boeser was left on his hands and knees after the play stopped, trainers came out to help, but was able to skate off the ice under his own power.
Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet had this to say in regards to his thoughts on the hit to his star forward:
“Obviously, it’s a dangerous play. I don’t know how Brock is, I haven’t seen him. But yeah, it’s a tough play.”
Known for being a rugged player who plays rough around the edge, this is Jeannot’s first suspension of his career. Over his five-year career, Jeannot has racked up 340 penalty minutes and 913 hits, finishing second in the league with 318 hits in the 2021-2022 season.
The undrafted Saskatchewan native was acquired by the Kings from the Tampa Bay Lightning this offseason in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round pick and a 2025 second-round pick. This wasn’t the first trade of his career, as the Nashville Predators traded him to the Lightning for a haul of a 2023 third, fourth and fifth-round pick, a 2024 second-round pick, a 2025 first-round pick and defenceman Cal Foote.
Jeannot will miss the Kings’ next three games against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche, with the opportunity to return when they take on the Detroit Red Wings on November 16.
