The Vancouver Canucks (17-31-5) play the seventh game of their eight-game homestand when they host the Anaheim Ducks (28-22-3) tonight at Rogers Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 pm.
The team is celebrating the Lunar New Year at tonight’s game.

What we saw

The Canucks held a full morning skate this morning. All players were accounted for aside from Filip Hronek, who took the morning off, but is expected to be available for tonight’s game. Nils Höglander, who missed practice on Wednesday due to a lower-body injury, was back on the ice with the group this morning; however, he will not play tonight. Max Sasson will also sit out.
In an effort to end an 11-game point drought, Conor Garland will move to the right wing with Elias Pettersson and Evander Kane, while Filip Chytil will start the game on left wing with David Kämpf and Linus Karlsson. Adam Foote said the position change is something the team has discussed with Chytil, and it’s something the player has embraced. The Canucks want to get a sense of what that will look like, so he’ll start there tonight against the Ducks.
For the first time in the NHL, former junior teammates Liam Öhgren and Jonathan Lekkerimäki will play together on a line with veteran Teddy Blueger.
After stopping 25 shots in relief of Kevin Lankinen against the Sharks, Nikita Tolopilo gets the start in goal tonight. His last start came in a 6-0 loss to Edmonton in the opener of this current homestand. Lankinen needs a break, having started five straight and seven of the team’s last eight outings.
While the Canucks are tied with Los Angeles for last in the NHL in goals from defencemen (15), four of the team’s last nine markers have been scored by blueliners, including both goals on Tuesday by Tom Willander and Filip Hronek. Hronek has scored in two of the past four games and leads the team’s defence corps with five goals on the season.
Veteran winger Jake DeBrusk is set to appear in his 600th NHL game tonight.

The Opponent

The Ducks come to town on the heels of a 7-4 loss in Edmonton on Monday night. Mikael Granlund had a hat trick – with all three goals coming on the power play – and Alex Killorn also scored. The loss snapped Anaheim’s seven-game win streak, which was preceded by a nine-game winless skid (8-0-1).
Cutter Gauthier leads the Ducks with 23 goals and 47 points. He is also third in the NHL with 198 shots on goal. He has 78 more shots than any of his teammates this season. Bennett Sennecke, who turned 20 yesterday, is tied for second on the club with 18 goals and is third in team scoring with 43 points. Sennecke had a hat trick, including the OT winner, in Calgary on Sunday. He logged a career-high 25:31 on Monday in Edmonton.
The Ducks have been getting by without Leo Carlsson, Mason MacTavish and Troy Terry – three of their top six scorers – who are all sidelined with injuries. Terry has missed 10 games with an upper body injury, but practiced with the team on Wednesday in Vancouver.  He was expected to return to the lineup tonight, however he has since been ruled out and will miss his 11th straight contest.
Anaheim sits third in the Pacific Division, three points back of Edmonton with a game in hand. They are just four points behind division-leading Vegas Golden Knights.
Joel Quenneville’s team can score, but it has trouble defending. Only the Canucks (3.68) allow more goals per game than the Ducks (3.55). Anaheim is 12-3 in games decided beyond regulation time, going 6-3 in games settled in overtime, and a perfect 6-0 in shootouts.
After backing up in Edmonton, Lukas Dostal returns to the net tonight. He is on a personal six-game winning streak and is the reigning NHL Third Star of the Week. On the win streak, Dostal is sporting a 1.93 GAA and a .931 save percentage.

News and notes

The Canucks beat the Ducks 5-4 in Anaheim on November 26th. They will meet twice more this season after tonight: March 24th in Vancouver and again April 12th in Orange County. The Canucks are 9-1 in their last 10 games against the Ducks.
The referees for tonight’s game are Trevor Hanson and Jordan Samuels-Thomas.

What we heard

Adam Foote on trying to slow down an Anaheim team that likes to attack off the rush: “We’ve got a good rush team in here tonight. We’ve got to move on from last game. It’s a new game. And we have to focus on our routes and how we play.”
Tyler Myers on Canucks trying to clean up their own zone: “We’ve taken a look at a few things in the last week. I know at times it may not look like it, but it’s coming. There are certain situations where there might be a switch or might not be a swtich, but I feel like guys are doing a good job and we’re working to get more consistent with it and you can feel we’re getting better at it.”
