The Hughes brothers take centre stage when the Vancouver Canucks (4-1-3) host the New Jersey Devils (6-4-2). This is the second time that Quinn, Jack and Luke Hughes have shared NHL ice and the eighth time that Quinn and Jack have gone head to head.
All three brothers found the scoresheet the only other time they faced off in a 6-5 New Jersey victory in Vancouver last December. Quinn confirmed this morning that his parents are in town for tonight’s match-up.

What we saw

Arturs Silovs gets the start in goal tonight. It will be his first appearance since a 4-1 loss in Tampa Bay on October 15th. He is 0-1-1 in his two starts this season with a 4.50 GAA and an 82.7% save percentage. Kevin Lankinen had started the past five games for the Canucks.
The team will make a couple of line-up changes in the wake of Monday’s 4-3 overtime loss to Carolina. Arshdeep Bains will start on a line with Elias Pettersson and Conor Garland while Nils Höglander slides down to play with Pius Suter and Daniel Sprong. And, like Silovs, Noah Juulsen will return to the line for the first time since the game in Tampa Bay two weeks ago. He’ll replace Vincent Desharnais on defence.
Much of the talk around the team for the past few days has been about a power play that has been held scoreless in six opportunities over the past two games. The Canucks are 5/25 (20%) on the season, however four of those five goals have come in two games against Calgary and Chicago. In seven games since the season opener against the Flames, the Canucks are 3 for 21 (14.3%) with the man advantage.
Brock Boeser carries a six-game point streak into action tonight. The veteran winger has three goals and four assists over that span. Boeser scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season on Monday against Carolina. Quinn Hughes and Pius Suter had the Canucks other goals.
At 1-0-3, the Canucks have secured a point in every game on home ice this season although they have just one win in four games in front of their home fans.

The visitors

The Devils begin a three-game Western Canadian road trip tonight. They are coming off a 6-2 win over Anaheim on Sunday. Nico Hischier had one of the Devils goals against the Ducks and has scored in three straight games. With nine goals on the season, the Devils captain shares the league-lead with Montreal’s Cole Caufield.
Hischier (9+3) shares the team lead in points with Jesper Bratt (2+10). Bratt has a goal and five assists on a six-game point streak.
Former Canuck Jacob Markstrom gets the start in goal tonight. He beat the Ducks on Sunday to improve to 4-3-1 on the season. Markstrom, who is seven games shy of 500 for his NHL career, has a 3.01 GAA and an 89.5% save percentage so far this season.
After starting the season with a pair of games in Prague, New Jersey leads the league with 12 games played already this season. The Devils share the NHL lead with a dozen power play goals. They are 12 for 40 (30%) on the season. Seven different Devils have scored with the man advantage.
These teams split their two meetings last season with each posting a victory in the other team’s building. The Canucks will visit the Devils on March 24th as part of a six-game road trip.

What we heard

Rick Tocchet on turning to Silovs tonight against the Devils: “Lanks has played five, six in a row and maybe he’s a little tired, but I think Arty’s got to get in there. Arty did a great job for us last year. His first start was just okay and his second start wasn’t that bad, so it’s not a big deal. He’s played a lot of good hockey for us.”
Quinn Hughes on looking for the games against New Jersey when the schedule comes out: “Obviously the first thing you do is look to see when you’re playing your brothers or the Devils. We’ve only done it once. It’s a really rare and unique opportunity and you just try to enjoy it. It’s an emotional day because there’s a lot of different thoughts and thinking about different things. You want them to do well and play well, but at the same time, you want your team to be successful and win.”
