Seeley may not have a huge public profile, but the 47-year-old joins the Canucks after eight seasons in the Kings organization. That shows dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to just one franchise. The fact that it just happens to be a team in Abbotsford’s division giving Seeley a head start on understanding his new assignment is a bonus.
The Powell River, BC native has a vast and varied background in the game. A former bruising defenceman in the Western Hockey League, Seeley played professionally in the ECHL, AHL and overseas in Germany, Austria and Northern Ireland.
After trying his hand as a coach for three seasons in the ECHL (2015-2018), Seeley moved into management, jumping into the GM’s role with the Ontario Reign. It was a full circle moment considering Seeley had been selected by the LA Kings in the sixth round of the 1997 Draft.
While it’s often difficult to determine the day-to-day influence a minor league general manager has on an AHL team, given all of the moving parts involved, Seeley’s teams have repeatedly demonstrated excellence. In four of his eight seasons as GM, Ontario posted 40 or more wins. This past season, the Reign led all Pacific Division teams in the AHL with 47 victories and 99 points. The club was also the best defensive team in the division and one of the top defensive teams in the league.
Over the past three seasons, the Reign improved its win total from 42 to 43 to 47 this past season. Under Seeley, Ontario qualified for the AHL playoffs in each of the past six seasons.
During his time as GM in Ontario, he had Marco Sturm as a head coach before the Boston Bruins hired him. Seeley also worked with Mike Stothers, who left the Reign in 2021 to take an assistant coaching job in Anaheim, and this past season was on the bench staff of the Pittsburgh Penguins. So clearly, Seeley has provided an environment that has helped coaches climb the ranks.
The fact that Seeley is a BC native adds a local flavour to all of this and follows the hiring of another BC resident, Daren Hermiston of Kamloops, as the club’s new director of player personnel. You have to wonder if this is all part of a master plan by the organization that will result in more BC born players in the pipeline.
Only time will tell on that front. But in Richard Seeley, the Canucks seem to have landed a seasoned hockey executive with plenty of relevant experience. And it’ll be interesting to see his first moves as he starts to shape the Abbotsford Canucks.
