After locking up Ilya Safonov earlier this month, Ryan Johnson has made his second signing as Vancouver Canucks general manager.
On Friday afternoon, Johnson announced the Canucks have agreed to terms with defenceman Jack Thompson on a one-year, two-way contract.
Thompson, 24, is a 6’1″, 189-lb right-shot defenceman. The Canucks acquired Thompson from the San Jose Sharks in an early March one-for-one swap that sent Jett Woo to California. In 14 games with the Abbotsford Canucks, Thompson scored three goals and 10 assists for 13 points. He outdid his production with the San Jose Barracuda, where he scored three goals and nine assists for 12 points in 42 games, in his short time in Abbotsford.
The Courtice, Ontario native was originally drafted in the third round (93rd overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. He spent one season in the OHL split between the Sudbury Wolves and Soo Greyhounds before jumping to the professional ranks with the Syracuse Crunch. He made his NHL debut with the Lightning in 2023-24, before he was moved to the Sharks, along with a 2024 third-round pick, in exchange for Anthony Duclair.
Thompson earned more NHL runway with the San Jose Sharks, playing 33 games across 2023-24 and 2024-25. He went pointless in the two games of 2023-24, but managed to produce four goals and six assists for 10 points in 31 games in 2024-25.
Per PuckPedia, Thompson will earn $850,000 in the NHL and $290,000 in the AHL.

Thompson will resume his role as a top defensive contributor in Abbotsford on a blueline that includes Sawyer Mynio and Kirill Kudryavtsev, whom then-head coach Manny Malhotra relied on heavily. Guillaume Brisebois will round out Abbotsford’s top four for next season.
The Canucks’ right-shot defenceman depth chart consists of Filip Hronek, Tom Willander, Victor Mancini and Thompson. The Canucks have 10 draft picks coming in late June’s draft and could bolster the depth of their blueline.
