As the floodgates of free agency opens in just a few hours, one of the first now former Canucks have signed with their new team for next season. Markus Granlund will be an Edmonton Oiler.

The dollar value on the contract has yet to be released, but it is assumed that Granlund will stay within the division on a one-year contract.

Previously with the Calgary Flames, Granlund will now stay within Western Canada for the first eight years of his career. Three full years with the Canucks after acquiring him for Hunter Shinkaruk, Granlund has been able to play 215 games, score 41 goals and put up 69 points.

In Edmonton they are desperate for any forward with some knowledge beyond their top players, so this move makes sense for the Oilers.

The first Canucks-related transaction leaked at the beginning of free agency for what might be a busy day for Vancouver. Tyler Myers and Jamie Benn are already linked to the Canucks and they have previously been active in the trade market and reportedly active yet again this offseason.

Previously on a deal at a cap hit of $1.475-million, Granlund takes only a slight decrease in pay to head on over to Edmonton.
