Plays of the Week: January 3rd

Told you I wasn’t going to pull a Rhys! Yes, the Jerk is now in charge, but you’re still stuck with me as a writer for a while yet. You’re also stuck with a bunch of other people too, who put out some great stuff over the past week. Let’s take a trip down memory lane!
The Games
“It would be easy to claim that the Canucks checked out mentally after the McNabb hit on Henrik, and that may or may not be true. One thing’s for sure, though; the end result of this game was the Kings controlling both nets. The shot count makes that pretty obvious; Los Angeles outshot Vancouver 38-27, but they also out-chanced them at a 2:1 ratio.” -Jeff Veillette
“Perhaps of some help to the Canucks was the return of their shutdown defender, Chris Tanev. When we last saw Tanev, he was injured blocking a shot late against the Tampa Bay Lightning before the Christmas break. His absence was felt, as the Canucks defence was suspect without their best shot suppressing defenceman. Tanev’s return wasn’t enough to bring the Canucks to possession parity, but it was a step in the right direction to be sure.” – JD Burke

Best of CanucksArmy
“Effective immediately, I’m stepping down from the Managing Editor role at Canucks Army. I’ve accepted a senior position within the Nation Network; one that involves me reaching my arms a little bit further across the platform. It’s an exciting new opportunity that I couldn’t pass up, and I’m incredibly excited to get started.
Thom and I felt that it was important to stay internal and stay local when appointing the new editor. People were understandably concerned about me coming in as someone with just one prior article on the site, especially when they saw my location and my previous work. Thankfully, we felt like we had a more than suitable successor within the site, and that person is JD Burke.” -Jeff Veillette
“Fox assisted on the first Kzoo goal of the game with a great pass to set up the play. Fox was playing with more of an edge tonight. A bit too hard for my taste with some of the liberties he was taking but he stayed out of the penalty box. I got pictures of this great sequence in the 2nd period of Fox eliminating a real scoring threat.” – Sarah Hobday
“The NHL Entry Draft is where teams are built, and by all accounts at the time, the Canucks walked away from this past draft with a decent crop of youngsters despite not having a second round pick. Since we are now 6 months after the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, I figured it would be a good time to take a look at who they selected and how they’ve done since June.” – Ryan Biech
“In the short term, it’s less painful for fans to watch a team that has a chance to win every night. I don’t mind the idea—especially in this year’s bottom-feeding Pacific Division—that the Canucks should still shoot for the postseason and try to catch lightning in a bottle. I want to see what lessons were learned after last year’s postseason debacle against Calgary, I think it would be a good experience for the team’s current group of youngsters and, done properly, I think a team in the salary-cap era can successfully build out its roster without necessarily relying solely high draft picks.” – Carol Schram
