On the eve of Friday’s NHL Trade Deadline, there are believed to be three to six total teams interested in Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland. After multiple reports this week connected Garland to the New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, and Columbus Blue Jackets, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun added three more teams to the list of those interested in the Canucks forward on Thursday afternoon.
“Further to Rick here, hearing Columbus, Washington, NJ, NYI, SJ, Boston among teams showing interest in Garland,” LeBrun wrote in a post to X, replying to a report from Rick Dhaliwal connecting Garland to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
On the latest episode of the DFO Rundown Insider Edition with Irfaan Gaffar and David Pagnotta, Pagnotta reported that the list of serious teams is closer to three: the Devils, the Bruins, and the Islanders.
“There is significant traction with respect to Conor Garland. ‘Very good’ chance that he is moved is how it’s being categorized,” Pagnotta added.
Garland, 29, is having a down year by his standards in a Canucks uniform. After finishing between 46 and 52 points throughout his first four years in Vancouver, Garland is now on pace to finish with 37 points in 71 games.
The Scituate, Massachusetts native signed a six-year, $36 million extension with the Canucks on July 1. The deal kicks in next season and carries a $6 million average annual value, along with a full no-move clause for the first three seasons. That could increase the urgency for the rebuilding Canucks to find a new home for Garland. While Garland has given no indication he wants out right now, a true nightmare scenario for the Canucks would be Garland changing his mind and asking out after he has full control of the situation.
The NHL Trade Deadline is Friday at Noon Pacific time. On Wednesday, the Canucks shipped out veteran defenceman Tyler Myers to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a second and fourth round pick. On Thursday, the Canucks and San Jose Sharks swapped AHL defencemen, with Vancouver sending Jett Woo to San Jose, getting Jack Thompson back in return.
