Former Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes may not hit the market next summer after all.
On Thursday, Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold shared that the team will re-sign Quinn Hughes and is working towards a long-term deal. However, they’re currently figuring out how long Hughes is willing to commit to.
“First of all, Quinn Hughes is an extraordinary player and an extraordinary person,” Leipold said, per NHL.com. “We had to give up a lot to get him in this past year. We are going to re-sign him. The question will be for how long. We would like to go as long as we could. He will probably want it to be a little shorter–shorter being maybe three years. We hopefully will end up at five, I don’t know, and the reason I can openly talk about this is that I’m not doing the negotiating.”
Hughes is set to enter the final year of a six-year deal next season. Originally signed with the Canucks following the expiration of his entry-level contract, it carries an annual cap hit of $7.85 million. Hughes is eligible to re-sign with the Wild on July 1st of this year, but also has the option to wait to hit the open market next July as a free agent. Hughes’ brothers Jack and Luke currently play for the New Jersey Devils, and they have expressed a desire to one day play together in the NHL. Jack Hughes has four years remaining on his current deal, while Luke Hughes has six.
For now, Quinn has expressed interest in remaining in Minnesota following next season. After a second-round loss to the Colorado Avalanche in the playoffs this year, the 26-year-old shared with media that he could see himself extending with the Wild.
“I really like it here. I think that I would definitely be open to re-signing,” Hughes told reporters in May. “I love the team. I love the city and the fans. Being in that locker room was a special group.”
Hughes was traded to the Wild last December. In exchange, the Canucks received Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, Zeev Buium, and Minnesota’s 2026 first-round pick, which is now confirmed to be the 24th overall selection.
