In the fourth of our five part series looking at attainable milestones for key Canucks next season, we look at Elias Pettersson who has franchise icons clearly in his sights:

Elias Pettersson

While much of the focus in this market remains on what Elias Pettersson did not do down the stretch and through the playoffs last season, it’s important to remember all that he has done in a relatively short period of time with the Vancouver Canucks. In six seasons with the hockey club, Pettersson has won the Calder Trophy as the National Hockey League’s Rookie of the Year, cracked the 100-point mark in 2022-23 and has recorded three straight seasons of 30 or more goals. Add it all up and the 25-year-old has 412 points in 407 regular season games. Pettersson has scored 34 more goals and 59 points than anyone else from the 2017 NHL Draft class. With those totals, he’s already ascended to 11th all-time in Canucks franchise scoring.
Pettersson will open next season just eight points behind Bo Horvat for 10th on the list. And before season’s end, as long as he gets his offensive mojo back, the Sundsvall, SWE product should zip past Todd Bertuzzi (449), Tony Tanti (470) and Pavel Bure (478). Beyond that, there is a significant jump to Thomas Gradin who currently occupies sixth spot (550) in franchise scoring.
An 88-point season will get Pettersson to the 500 point mark for his career. For reference, it took Henrik and Daniel Sedin both a decade to reach the 500-point milestone. Daniel accomplished the feat in his 672nd career game while Henrik did it in his 678th. If he appears in all 82 games this season, Pettersson will come up 11 shy of 500 for his career. So despite his struggles late last season, Pettersson is still tracking to be one of the Canucks all-time scoring leaders when all is said and done.
Currently 17th, Pettersson needs 30 goals to become just the eighth player in franchise history to score 200 times in a Canucks uniform. Horvat was the last to do it and finished with 201.
Tied for 14th to start the season, Pettersson with 242 needs 25 assists to reach the top 10 in that category although with Quinn Hughes (290) and JT Miller (259) ahead of him to start the season, there will be a reshuffling of the top 10 all-time as Canucks as the schedule unfolds.
It’s interesting to note that there isn’t another player in the top-50 all time in franchise scoring in double-digits in penalty minutes. Pettersson has been assessed just 74 minutes in penalties to this point in his career. It’s one of the reasons he was runner-up for the Lady Byng Trophy this year.
Pettersson will open the 2024-25 season tied with Pavel Bure with 32 game-winning goals. That already has him sharing fifth spot on the Canucks all-time list. His next game winner will match Trevor Linden for fourth. And after that, it’s a short list of consisting of just Henrik Sedin (38), Markus Naslund (49) and Daniel Sedin, who’s in a class by himself, with 86.
As far as playoff scoring goes, Pettersson has 8+16=24 in 30 career post-season games. He sits behind both JT Miller and Quinn Hughes among active Canucks in franchise playoff scoring. Pettersson needs 10 playoff points to catch the Dragon Slayer Alex Burrows and Greg Adams who both posted 34 points in their careers with the Canucks. Those two sit tied for 11th in franchise history. Pettersson needs 14 playoff points to move into the team’s top 10. The Canucks and Canucks fans would welcome Pettersson collecting 14 — or more — points as early as next spring.

Key marks for Elias Pettersson next season:

9 points for 10th place in franchise scoring
30 goals for 200 in his NHL career
88 points for 500 in his NHL career
