It’s been less than a week since the world lost John Garrett, but the outpouring of positive words and memorable stories continues to trickle in about how he touched the lives of many throughout his hockey career.
Vancouver Canucks fans will remember him for not only his two seasons as the team’s netminder but also for his years of legendary broadcasting alongside John Shorthouse. With the entire hockey world grieving the loss, the Canucks shared a message from the Garrett family on their social media on Saturday evening:
“We would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and the messages of condolence we have received since the passing of our beloved husband, brother, dad and grandpa. Cheech had an amazing relationship with the Canucks’ community, and we’ve been blown away by the volume of wishes that have been sent our way.
“As per John’s wishes there will be no service at this time – instead, use everyday to be a little more like Cheech: be kind and be happy. Treat everyone with dignity.
“In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
“Thank you Canucks Nation. We share in your grief at this most trying time.”

The hockey world lost Garrett on April 27, 2026. At the age of 74, Garrett was still working, sharing his voice and opinions, calling hockey games. He was on the road covering the Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Mammoth series as the colour commentator alongside play-by-play announcer Harnarayan Singh.
Garrett served as the colour commentator for the Canucks for 20 years, on the call from the 2002-03 season until the 2022-23 season. He worked alongside some of the best in the business, including Jim Hughson and John Shorthouse. But for many who have worked with him, Garrett is viewed as the leader and captain of the broadcast group.
