As the Vancouver Canucks return home from their two-week road trip, the team finds themselves with as many wins as when they hit the road: two.
That’s right, they dropped all six contests during their trip out East. Add in the loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Canucks have lost seven straight games. While seeing the team go on extended losing streaks isn’t new after what Canucks fans watched last season, these consecutive losses felt different.
This Canucks team was competitive through the first 40 minutes in four of those six games, heading into the third period within a goal, tied, or winning. They just weren’t able to get the game across the finish line in any of those contests.
Losing this many games in a row is going to affect just about every professional athlete. But if the group sticks together and pulls on the same rope, Brendan Gallagher believes they’ll get through it and be better for it:
“It’s important to stay together,” Gallagher told Daily Faceoff Vancouver. “Obviously, it’s not easy going through this kind of stuff, but when you come out the other side, it’s rewarding if you get through it together. You know, there’s an optimistic view, but obviously right now, we’re at a low point. It just needs to be corrected.”
Being on a rebuilding team isn’t new for Gallagher. After a Stanley Cup Finals appearance with the Montreal Canadiens in 2021, the Canadiens saw significant roster turnover and brought in youth to focus on the future. As a result, the Canadiens finished last in the Atlantic Division and missed the playoffs in three consecutive seasons.
Gallagher played a big role as a veteran leader for the Canadiens, who are now entering their Stanley Cup window. He’s now facing a similar situation in Vancouver and is doubling down on the vision that if the group sticks together through these losses, they will reap the rewards on the other side.
“Like I said, it can be rewarding if you come through it, but it’s work, and you’re gonna have to sacrifice,” Gallagher said. “You’re gonna have to test yourself as individuals and really push yourself to get better and push your teammates. And I think as long as everyone sticks with it and don’t turn on each other, we’ll work towards the same goal. It’ll be rewarding when you come out of it.”
The Canucks will have their hands full as they attempt to snap this seven-game losing streak, welcoming the Carolina Hurricanes to town on Tuesday. Regardless of when the team breaks this skid, Gallagher believes that, based on his previous experience, togetherness during tough times will help them eventually get on the right side of the results.
