Tale of the Tape: Players to Watch

The Canucks’ Young Stars will be tested by a Calgary Flames team that has shown well in this tournament. The Flames narrowly lost 4-3 in overtime to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday, but bounced back with a 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. They are led by Zayne Parekh, a dynamic right-shot defender and the ninth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. Parekh is the reigning OHL Defender of the Year, coming off an impressive 96-point season with the Memorial Cup-winning Saginaw Spirit.
Other notable Flames players include Andrew Basha, a recent second-round pick who racked up 85 points with the Medicine Hat Tigers, and Matvei Gridin, their second of two first-round selections in the 2024 draft. Additionally, former Canucks prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo will be facing their old team for the first time since being traded to Calgary for Elias Lindholm at last year’s trade deadline. Brzustewicz has had a strong tournament, contributing a goal and an assist across his two games.
On the Canucks’ side, the top line of Arshdeep Bains, Aatu Räty, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki continues to highlight the roster. Yet, Sunday’s game welcomed a few of the younger prospects stepping up to the plate. Vilmer Alriksson, in particular, stood out with a goal, an assist, and several key physical plays. The pairing of Elias Pettersson and Kirill Kudryavtsev on defence has been rock solid, providing steady play from the back end. Meanwhile, other notable efforts have come from Anthony Romani, Max Sasson and Riley Patterson.
With no morning skate, official lineups are yet to be confirmed, but it is expected that AHL-signed goaltender Jonathan Lemieux will get the nod in net for the Canucks as they aim to close out the tournament with a perfect record.
