The NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone, and over a week into their new homes, the traded Vancouver Canucks are beginning to acclimate.
With the team transitioning toward a rebuild, veterans like Tyler Myers and Conor Garland, along with pending free agents David Kämpf and Lukas Reichel, were shipped off for what totalled to six draft picks. So, let’s dive into how these former Canucks are doing with their new teams!
Tyler Myers
New Team: Dallas Stars | Games Played: 4 | Goals: 0 | Points: 0 | Plus/Minus: E | Average Time on Ice: 15:14
Myers – at 50% retained – was traded to the Stars on March 4, in exchange for a 2027 second-round pick and a 2029 fourth-round pick. However, he was held out of his first available game against the Colorado Avalanche, as the Stars wanted to ramp him up after he had not played for over a month, dating back to before the Olympic break.
Once he debuted in the lineup, Myers formed a pair with Lian Bischel. The two towering defencemen (Myers 6’8″ and Bischel 6’7″) form the biggest defence pairings in the NHL. Myers has two penalty minutes, yet has drawn three penalties for the Stars, adding seven hits and six blocked shots in his four outings.
Analytically, with Myers on the ice at 5v5, the Stars are controlling 45.1% of shot attempts, 58.9% of expected goals, 55.8% of scoring chances, and 64.7% of high-danger scoring chances.
While Myers is still searching for his first point in a Stars uniform, he has been playing second-unit penalty kill time, averaging 1:13 shorthanded minutes per game. His presence has been valuable for the Stars, as Dallas is a perfect 4-0 with Myers in the lineup, and has allowed just eight goals (tied for third-fewest) over that span.
Conor Garland
New Team: Columbus Blue Jackets | Games Played: 5 | Goals: 4 | Points: 4 | Plus/Minus: -1 | Average Time on Ice: 13:35
Garland and his $6Mx6 contract extension that kicks in next season were traded to the Blue Jackets on March 5, in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. Garland quickly made his Blue Jackets debut two days after the move against some familiar faces, the Utah Mammoth.
Since joining the Blue Jackets, Garland has played second line right wing with Kent Johnson and Sean Monahan. While he was held off the scoresheet in his debut against the Mammoth, Garland made a fantastic second and third impression, scoring a pair of goals against the Los Angeles Kings and Tampa Bay Lightning and logging nine shots on goal – doing so while playing 12 minutes or less in both outings.
Analytically, with Garland on the ice at 5v5, the Blue Jackets are controlling 51.8% of shot attempts, 63.2% of expected goals, 64.6% of scoring chances, and 60% of the high-danger scoring chances.
With Garland in the lineup, the Blue Jackets have secured at least a point in all five games, with a 2-0-3 record. After a shaky start and a mid-season coaching change, Columbus is back in the playoff race, sitting just one point behind the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings for the final two Wild Card spots in the Eastern Conference, and two points shy of the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders for a top-two spot in the Metropolitan Division.
David Kämpf
New Team: Washington Capitals | Games Played: 0 | Goals: 0 | Points: 0 | Plus/Minus: E | Average Time on Ice: 0:00
Kämpf was traded to the Capitals close to 12:00 PM’s deadline, in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick. But unlike Myers and Garland, Kämpf has yet to make his Capitals debut, due to visa issues.
Now, according to Tarik El-Bashir, Capitals insider for Monumental Sports Network, Kämpf has returned to Vancouver to be with his expecting wife as they sort out his visa issues.
David Kampf has returned to VAN to be with his wife, who is expecting very soon. Visa remains an issue, per Coach Carbery. "Now it's twofold, and this is where immigration becomes almost a moot point until they have their child. Once he comes back, hopefully by then..." #ALLCAPS
Lukas Reichel
New Team: Boston Bruins/Providence Bruins | Games Played: 3 | Goals: 1 | Points: 5 | Plus/Minus: +6 | Average Time on Ice: N/A
Reichel was traded to the Bruins organization near the 12:00 PM deadline in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick. As he was playing in the AHL with the Abbotsford Canucks before the trade, Reichel remained in the American League with the Providence Bruins.
It appears Reichel has been skating in the top-six on a line with Matthew Poitras and Georgii Merkulov, where he has really seemed to find his footing. In his Providence debut, Reichel picked up a pair of points, including the game-winning goal in overtime.
LUKAS REICHEL’S FIRST GOAL AS A PROVIDENCE BRUIN IS THE OVERTIME WINNER‼️
His second game was even better, tallying three assists and a plus-four rating. He was held off the scoresheet in the Bruins’ most recent outing, but has his point totals up to five in just three games with his new club. With Reichel in the lineup, the Bruins have a 2-1 record and sit comfortably at the top of the Atlantic Division, and are one of two teams in the AHL who have already clinched a playoff berth.
Honourable mentions
These trades happened a little earlier than the NHL’s Trade Deadline week. But let’s still give a quick check-up on these two former Canucks who netted them the biggest return.
Quinn Hughes
New Team: Minnesota Wild | Games Played: 36 | Goals: 4 | Points: 44 | Plus/Minus: +7 | Average Time on Ice: 27:58
Hughes was traded to the Wild on December 12 in exchange for Zeev Buium, Marco Rossi, Liam Öhgren, and a 2026 first-round pick. Hughes has formed a deadly top-pair with Brock Faber, averaging the highest time on ice of his career.
Since the trade, Hughes is second in points by a defenceman – trailing only Evan Bouchard by five points in one fewer game – while the Wild have the seventh-highest points percentage (.662) in the NHL. Minnesota are primed to be a serious contender come playoff time, but will have the toughest test with the Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars in their division.
Kiefer Sherwood
New Team: San Jose Sharks | Games Played: 11 | Goals: 3 | Points: 1 | Plus/Minus: -4 | Average Time on Ice: 16:48
Sherwood was traded to the Sharks on January 19 in exchange for a 2026 and 2027 second-round pick. After starting on the top line with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, Sherwood is now playing third-line minutes with Pavol Regenda and Philipp Kurashev. The former Canuck is also heavily featured on the Sharks’ special teams, playing on the second-unit power play and first-unit penalty kill.
It took Sherwood some time to get acclimated to his new team, and he went four games without a point. Rumours went as far as saying that if the Sharks were unable to extend Sherwood, they would entertain flipping him before the deadline. However, after his fifth game in a Sharks uniform, when he scored the game-winning goal with under four minutes to go against the Montreal Canadiens, Sherwood earned a five-year, $5.75 million AAV extension with the Sharks.
The Sharks are in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race, currently sitting one point behind the Seattle Kraken – with a game in hand – for the second and final Wild Card spot, at the time of this writing.
