Vancouver Caucks prospect Jared McCann can absolutely rip it.
When the two-way centreman – who will likely return to the OHL to play first-line minutes for the powerhouse Soo Greyhounds this season – misses with a wrister – he dents the glass. When his shot is on target though? Well then even Jets prospect Connor Hellebuyck, by most accounts the best goaltender outside the NHL, has no chance.
McCann opened the scoring in Saturday afternoon’s game between the Canucks’s Young Stars side and the Winnipeg Jets’ with a lovely shot. And hilariously he celebrated by giving the on-ice official a very friendly hug:
That tender embrace could go a long way towards changing the Canucks’ historically fractious relationship with the league’s referees.
As for McCann, he’s shown very well in this second game of the tournament. In addition to finding twine for his first goal of Young Stars, McCann showed well on the penalty kill, and has played a solid two-way game overall. Now McCann will just have to keep it up, and then some, if he hopes to make the battle for the NHL club’s fourth-line centre spot even remotely interesting.
