Friday Mailbag: New Timeslot

Oct 2, 2015, 20:00 EDTUpdated:

Hey, it’s a new timeslot! Between the mailbag and the roundtable, Friday will be the day where we answer all of your questions moving forward. That way, if our answers are anger-inducing, you have the entire weekend to shed the feeling by doing fun things.
Let’s get to your questions!
@Johnny_Perogy asked: Who has the most to lose now that the kids are playing so well?
This is one of the reasons people were skeptical to call Ben Hutton a full-time Canuck in our roundtable; it’s hard to find somebody to kick off. You’ll hear a hundred chants for Sbisa, but that contract makes him hard to admit defeat on.
The forwards, on the other hand, are a different story. Linden Vey is growing out of prospect age and an be walked away from if the team chooses not to qualify him in July, and with the way he’s playing, could even possibly clear waivers on a strong day. Brandon Prust isn’t getting younger, is a pending UFA, and could be relegated to being used on nights where the team needs physicality. Chris Higgins’ injury buys some time for one of the junior kids to get their nine games in. Further injuries, suspensions, freak accidents, etc could leave a spot available without jeopardizing anybody’s jobs on an extended basis.
@hankdanknburr asked: Last night notwithstanding, should we concerned with the lack of goals scored by the Canucks this preseason?
Probably not. Even if this team is going to be not as good as previous years, they’re certainly not going to keep shooting under five percent. Yesterday was a bit of positive regression, mostly in the direction of three players; I’m sure that the others will start to bounce back moving ahead.
@RyanNPike asked: Why do you think Sven Baertschi didn’t work out in Calgary?
Thanks for the question! I think this would be best answered by someone who watched him extensively on the Flames. So we’re going to go over to our frienemies at Flames Nation and link you to this fantastic piece on how exactly they messed up. Now, what exactly is it that you do again?
*looks at twitter bio* “Managing Editor of Flames Nation”. Well, this is awkward.
@vowswithinhb asked: When do the Canucks move on from the twins? Will it play out into an Iginla situation?
The Sedins are being approached differently from somebody like Jarome Iginla in Calgary or Mats Sundin (trigger topic, I know) in Toronto. It appears that Benning & Co would like them to be mentors to the team around them moving forward, and given the fact that they’d have to ship off a pair of big contracts at once, that might be a forced position.
There are worse things in the world than having a forced, plug-and-play first line, though. Even if you don’t believe in retooling, your roster doesn’t have to be all-out smoldering ashes to do a proper rebuild.
@Kian5000 asked: Vancouver Canucks. Over or Under 93.5 regular season points?
On the dot. In the last game of the season, Jacob Markstrom and Cam Talbot will get to the 37th round of the shootout without allowing a single goal, causing the referees to roll their eyes and split the last point between the two teams.
