As the Canadian Hockey League celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the league has announced its list of the Top 50 Players of the Last 50 Years, which recognizes “the most influential and accomplished alumni from the Western Hockey League (WHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) over the past half century.”
Landing on the list is legendary former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo. Luongo spent four seasons in the QMJHL from 1995-1999, playing with the Val-d’Or Foreurs and the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Luongo is one of six goaltenders on the CHL’s Top 50 list, including Martin Brodeur, Marc-André Fleury, Grant Fuhr, Carey Price, and Patrick Roy.
In 1998, Luongo helped the Foreurs earn their first league Championship and Memorial Cup appearance, and did the same for the Titan the following season. The Montreal native has played the third-most games and posted the third-most wins in QMJHL playoff history, with a 38-15 record across 56 appearances. Among goalies with 20 career QMJHL playoff games, Luongo is 12th with a .917 save percentage.
While playing in the CHL, Luongo was drafted fourth overall by the New York Islanders in 1997. He made his professional debut in late 1999, first in the AHL, then a stint in the NHL. The following year, he was traded to the Florida Panthers, where he immediately became the team’s starter at just 22 years old.
In the summer of 2006, Luongo was traded to the Canucks, along with Lukas Krajicek and a 2006 sixth-round pick, in exchange for Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan Allen, and Alex Auld. He played eight seasons in a Canucks uniform, but will be most remembered for his runner-up Vezina campaign in his debut season in Vancouver, and the infamous 2011 Stanley Cup run.
Luongo backstopped Vancouver to its third Stanley Cup Final appearance in franchise history. His 38-15-7 record carried the team to their first Presidents’ Trophy that season, finishing as a finalist for the Vezina with a 2.11 GAA and a .928 SV%. Unfortunately for Canucks fans, Luongo would last just two and a half more seasons in Vancouver before he was moved back to the Panthers for Jacob Markstrom and Shawn Matthias.
Overall, Luongo finished his NHL career third in wins and games played all-time with 489 wins earned in 1,044 appearances. With 77 shutouts across his career, he sits ninth in that category.
Luongo also had an illustrious International career, which included a World Junior silver medal, two World Championship gold medals, and two Olympic gold medals across three appearances from 2006-2014. Notably, he was the number one starter for Team Canada at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, where the team took home gold. In five games at that tournament, he posted a perfect 5-0 record with a .927 SV%.
