As hockey begins to ramp up in North America, European leagues are already in full swing, with many kicking off their opening games today.
The Vancouver Canucks had two prospects – Lucas Forsell and Melvin Fernström – kick off their 2024–25 campaigns, both contributing points in their opening matches.
Back with Färjestad in the SHL, Lucas Forsell got his season off to a great start by scoring a nifty goal just 33 seconds into the second frame. Finding himself alone in the slot, he made a couple of slick jukes before jamming home his own rebound to open the scoring for Färjestad.

This goal sparked a five-goal second period, leading to a dominant 5-0 victory.
The game was part of the Champions League, an all-season tournament that runs simultaneously throughout the season and includes top teams from various European leagues.
The 21-year-old enjoyed much success in this competition last season; by all accounts, that trend may continue. With less pressure than league play, Färjestad has historically given Forsell more opportunities in the lineup during these matches. And today was no exception. He finished the game with a goal, two shots, and 13:59 of ice time. Though he skated on the second line, he was not part of the power play units, which featured heavily in the match.
It remains to be seen how his minutes will evolve when league play resumes, but it’s a positive start to a season which Forsell will need to impress, should he earn an NHL contract before his rights expire next summer.
Meanwhile, over in Sweden, Canucks’ recent third-round pick Melvin Fernström took part in his regular season debut for Örebro’s J20 team. Although Fernström spent most of the pre-season with Örebro’s SHL squad, his season began at the J20 level, where the schedule starts earlier.
Fernström wasted no time making an impact, recording his first points just minutes into the opening frame. Positioned as the half-wall triggerman on the top powerplay unit, the 18-year-old picked up the primary assist in the season’s first goal.

Shortly after, he collected his first goal of the season in tight to post two points in quick succession during the opening frame of the season.

Fernström’s goal proved the game-winner, as Örebro held on for a 2-1 victory. He played significant minutes throughout the game, including key defensive shifts in the final moments to secure the win.
With the SHL season still a few weeks away (September 21st), he has time to solidify his position as a leading player at the J20 level early, which could lead to a promotion to the SHL.
Last season, Fernström split his time between the J20 and SHL circuits, leading the J20 in goals (31) and finishing third in points (63).
Back in North America, the Canucks have several other prospects in action this weekend, as pre-season games are underway across the Canadian Hockey League. As always, we will have you covered with all updates as more prospects take to the ice and begin making their case for the upcoming season.
