Amidst all of the drama surrounding Vancouver Canucks centers J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, it appears that trade chatter has also increased surrounding the two, particularly Miller.
NHL insider Darren Dreger joined Sekeres and Price on Monday to talk about the rumours surrounding the two players, citing that trade chatter has increased with Miller specifically. Dreger also stated that, while conversations have been had with teams, it doesn’t mean that Miller will eventually be moved at this point.
What I know is, and this is based on intel and sourcing from around the league, is that there’s been a lot more chatter, certainly around J.T. Miller. I don’t think anyone would be surprised by that because his name always seems to find that rumor mill.
Based on what went down recently, where you had Rick Tocchet come out, you had Quinn Hughes speak on this, you had Patrik Allvin talk about what was once an alleged rift between [Miller and Pettersson]. Now the allegations have been removed. You don’t have to like your coworker, I can appreciate that, and maybe it’s much ado about very little, but I think that that did fuel this speculation, fuel the fire among clubs around the National Hockey League who admit that the chatter specific to J.T. Miller has increased.
As far as Pettersson is concerned, I’m sure that Patrik Allvin gets calls and has had conversations in the past. When you look at the talent level of Elias Pettersson, there wouldn’t be many teams that wouldn’t have an interest in him, despite the fact that, for whatever reason, he just seems to find ways to get in his own way.
But I want to remind people that teams have conversations, managers have conversations about basically every player. We know on every team there are untouchables. But in this case, even though those are two top-end talents, and in one case, you’ve got the no-move clause on J.T. Miller. Which, by the way, he has not been asked to consider waving. He has not. But that doesn’t prevent teams from calling and having that level of conversation, and just an acknowledgement to Patrik Allvin of “Look, if you’re ever getting to that place where you’re looking to move J.T., here’s what we’d be interested in doing because we liked that player.” I do think that those conversations have been had, and I think that they’ve increased of late, but that doesn’t mean that J.T. Miller is imminently getting moved.
Miller has been an important contributor to the Canucks this season, with 6 goals and 17 assists for 23 points in 25 games. That said, he did miss some time while on a leave of absence for reasons that still remain unknown to the public.
Pettersson hasn’t quite had the start that he was hoping for, but he’s picked up his play as of late, with 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 34 games. He’s currently slated to miss the next week due to an injury.
