Welcome to the yearly wrap up of the top read articles over the last year!
The Vancouver Canucks were without their first-round pick in this year’s NHL draft after they shipped it off to Tampa Bay for J.T. Miller — a deal that’s definitely helped the Canucks up front.
But without a first-round pick, CanucksArmy writer Stephan Roget took a dive into if the Canucks should get back into the round.
That article, published on Feb. 6, was the 17th most-read article this year.
Roget’s argument was largely surrounding the hype of many of the players that were available arguing that the Canucks could use another bluechip prospect in the pipelines.
In that, he suggested a number of players Vancouver could use to make it happen: Chris Tanev, Jacob Markstrom, Thatcher Demko, Tanner Pearson, Troy Stecher, Adam Gaudette or a future first round pick.
Here’s some of what Roget wrote:
Vancouver isn’t that far into the post- era of their rebuild that they couldn’t benefit from another first round pick, especially one from a draft class as strong as 2020. Sure, they’re benefitting from having JT Miller more than they would a prospect years away from the NHL – but what if they didn’t have to choose? If Jim Benning and Co. are going to buy their way back into the first round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, they’re going to have to pony up some significant assets. The list of Vancouver property that would be worthy of such a return is long (and definitely contains JT Miller, for the record). The list of Canuck assets that could return a 2020 first round pick and that they could actually afford to give up is much shorter.
