CANUCKSARMY GDT 31 – CANUCKS @ JETS

The Smythe division rivalry is renewed this evening as the Vancouver Canucks travel to Winnipeg to face the Jets. The Canucks have been plastered with injuries as of late and they’ll enter tonight’s matchup without winger Sven Baertschi after he was hit in the face with a puck Saturday night. The line blender may get a heavy dose of frappe tonight.
As for the Jets, 60 minutes might be all they need to beat their opponent. Regardless…

LINE COMBINATIONS
The latest injury goes to Sven Baertschi (puck to the face) so Nikolay Goldobin will slot back in. Nic Dowd wasn’t exactly a star last game which could mean Alex Burmistrov could play again. Still no Brandon Sutter or Erik Gudbranson and Bo Horvat is gone until mid-January. Utica will look like a ghost town by the time it’s all said and done.
Jacob Markstrom will most likely get the nod.

Dustin Byfuglien left Saturday’s game vs. Lightning (lower body) and will be updated today. No other lineup news as of now.
Connor Hellebuyck should be the starter this evening.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- Brock Boeser once again found the net in Calgary and maintains his point-per-game pace. An 82 point season for a rookie, let alone a Canucks rookie, is worth a Calder trophy. Through all the injuries and different line combinations, Boeser has found a way to rise to the occasion. He’s going to be a story until he’s not. Get used to it.
- Brendan Gaunce got awfully close to a goal last game, like real close. If Jacob Markstrom can get his shutout, Gaunce can score a goal. Like ONE FREAKING GOAL! Put him on Boeser’s line, that should almost guarantee one for sure. Right?
- The Jets have two players in the Top 15 in scoring, Blake Wheeler with 38 points (4th overall) and Mark Scheifele with 34 points (11th overall). Thankfully, the Canucks defence hasn’t been extremely porous but with all of the forwards on Vancouver’s roster getting banged up, it wouldn’t be wise to take a penalty against the Jets.
- Even though Jake Virtanen with Henrik and Daniel Sedin has the highest CF% of all the lines on the team, followed right behind them is Loui Eriksson with the Twins. Their combined 54.7% rating is only a few points behind the Virtanen line of 59.76%. After that, Sam Gagner, Alex Burmistrov, and Thomas Vanek rank third. If anyone should be playing with the Sedins it’s Eriksson and Virtanen. Let’s stop fooling around and keep that intact. Boeser can get the new fast wingers as needed but keep some consistency if at all possible.
- Random stat time! Did you know: Chris Tanev has the most points of any Canuck against the Jets since the start of the 2015/16 season? You didn’t. It’s true. Tanev has a goal and three assists in seven games played against Winnipeg. He might be the guy to play hero.

Never complain, Vancouver.
MY 94 CENTS
Can it get any worse for the Canucks? Injury after injury has mounted and it feels like only a matter of time before Jim Benning calls up, yes you guessed it, Jayson Megna. The Jets, on the other hand, seem to have everything going right for them lately. This could be a very long game for Canucks fans but at the same time, can anyone say TRAP GAME?
