The Vancouver Canucks have reached an agreement with goaltender Joe Cannata, the club announced on Thursday. The deal is a one-year, two-way deal, according to Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province.
The 25-year-old goaltender split time between the American League and the ECHL last season, and posted excellent results at both levels. For his career the former Merrimack Warriors goaltender has managed a respectable .913 save percentage in 48 games at the American League level, and it seems likely that he’ll at least serve as a backup for the Comets this upcoming season.
In agreeing to a deal with Cannata the Canucks will preempt the 25-year-old from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Had he not come to an agreement with the club, he was free to sign with any team as a Group VI UFA come Juy 1.
The Canucks still have some work to do in shoring up their organizational goaltending depth. Beyond the fact that the club is expected to trade one of Eddie Lack or Jacob Markstrom in the next couple of weeks, Comets backup Joacim Eriksson’s entry-level deal is set to expire. He’ll be a restricted free agent should the Canucks opt to qualify him.
