Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed centre Tyler Motte to a one-year, one-way contract valued at $975,000.

“Tyler plays a physical, two-way game that complements our forward group,” said Benning. “He’s strong on the forecheck, helps our penalty kill and showed he can contribute offensively last year. We’re pleased to have Tyler continue his career as a member of the Vancouver Canucks.”
Motte, 24, recorded 16 points (9-7-16) and 10 penalty minutes in 74 games played with Vancouver last season. The 5’10”, 192-pound centre has played 153 career NHL games (18-12-30) with Vancouver, Columbus and Chicago.
The St. Clair, MI, native has played 67 games in the American Hockey League (21-11-32) and before turning pro, played three seasons with the University of Michigan, recording 105 points (50-55-105) in 107 games played. Motte has also represented team USA at the 2013 World Junior Championships (silver medal).
Motte was originally acquired by Vancouver in a trade along with Jussi Jokinen in exchange for Thomas Vanek on February 26, 2018.

Motte receives a minor raise from the $925,000 that he was receiving on his entry level contract.

As Jim Benning suggested in the press release, Motte gives the Canucks a variety of tools that they value within their bottom six. He is hard on the forecheck, plays physical, and can assist them on the penalty kill.

With Motte signed, the Canucks still have three restricted free agents with Josh Leivo, Nikolay Goldobin, and Brock Boeser looking for new deals.

According to CapFriendly, the Canucks have about $7,769,296 in cap space at this moment. That is with 13 forwards, 10 defencemen and 2 goalies on the roster, so in reality, they have a bit more space than what is suggested there.
