The Vancouver Canucks have agreed to terms with veteran right-handed defenceman Tyler Myers on a three-year contract extension, the club announced Thursday afternoon.
Myers, 34, collected five goals, 29 points, and 77 penalty minutes while averaging 18:57 of ice time in 77 games with the Canucks during the 2023-24 regular season.
The Houston, Texas product contributed one assist and logged an average of 19:30 per night in 12 additional games with the Canucks in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Standing in at 6’8″ and 229 pounds, Myers is one of the tallest players in National Hockey League history. His new contract with the Canucks runs through the end of the 2026-27 season and carries a $3 million annual cap hit; according to TSN’s Darren Dreger, it also includes a full no-movement clause through 2025-26 and a partial NTC thereafter.
“Tyler has been a valued member of our organization and we are very happy to have him back with our team,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said Thursday. “He brings a unique skillset to the ice and is a key member of our leadership group. Tyler is a big, strong, physical defenceman who fits in nicely on our backend.”
Myers took a 50 percent pay cut from his previous deal to remain with the Canucks for the next three seasons. He initially joined the Canucks back in 2019 on a five-year contract worth $6 million per season.
The Canucks have been among the league’s busiest teams in recent days, trading Ilya Mikheyev and Sam Lafferty to the Chicago Blackhawks and signing Teddy Blueger, Dakota Joshua, and now Myers to multi-year extensions. Earlier this month, the Canucks signed defenceman Filip Hronek to a new eight-year deal.
The Buffalo Sabres originally selected Myers in the first round (No. 12 overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft. Myers debuted with the club during the 2008-09 season, collecting 11 goals and 48 points (both career highs) in 82 games and winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie.
Myers spent the first five full seasons of his career in Buffalo before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets midway through his sixth in part of a deal that saw Evander Kane and Zach Bogosian head to Buffalo in exchange for himself, Drew Stafford, Joel Armia, Brendan Lemieux, and a 2015 first-round pick (Jack Roslovic).
During his five seasons in Winnipeg, Myers helped the Jets become a consistent playoff team and logged big minutes during their run to the Western Conference Final in 2018. He left the club the following year as an unrestricted free agent.
Through 995 career NHL games over parts of 15 seasons with the Sabres, Jets, and Canucks, Myers has collected 93 goals and 371 points. He’s added seven goals and 16 points in 61 career playoff contests.
