of the Canucks Weekly Prospect Report where I dig into all the latest stats,
rumours, gossip, news, achievements, and even made up stories from around the
different junior hockey leagues. We look into the play of all (non-AHL) Canucks prospects from the CHL, NCAA, Europe, and
even the ECHL.
Without further ado, continue
past the jump to see what went down!

  • Tenacious
C, Cole Cassels, finished the year with 1 assist in 2 games, a -2 and 4
PIMs.  Oshawa (58.943% Est. Fen. Close)
finished first in the OHL’s Eastern Conference and will face the Peterborough Petes
(46.633% Est. Fen Close) in the first round of the playoffs.
  • Jared
McCann is back from his wrist injury and in his last two games he scored 1 goal
and 3 assists, extending his point streak to 14 games, earning a +5 and 0
PIMs.  The Soo (56.119%) finished first
in the West and will face the Saginaw Spirit (47.196%) in the first round of
    the playoffs.
  • Showtime
Virtanen finished his last 3 games with a -2, 6 PIMs and 0 points.  Calgary (55.863%) finished 1st in
their division and will face the Kootenay Ice (48.064%) in the first round of
the playoffs.  Showtime is considered one of the WHL’s top wingers.
  • Jordan
Subban finished his final 3 games with 3 assists, a -1 and 2 PIMs.  Despite being a terrible team, Belleville
(47.595%) made it into the playoffs as a 7th seed and will face the
Barrie Colts (49.412%) in the first round of the playoffs – this could be an
upset for the higher ranked team, but the Colts have some great firepower.
  • Evan
McEneny played in 3 games this week earning a -3 and 4 PIMs.  Kingston (52.275%) finished in 6th
in the OHL East and will face 3rd ranked North Bay (56.632%).
  • Ashton
Sautner skated in 2 games this week where he notched 3 assists and earned a
-1.  His Edmonton Oil Kings (53.685%)
barely made it into the post-season and will face top the ranked Brandon Wheat
    Kings (55.403%).
  • Miles
Liberati finished off his season with 2 games, 1 assist and a +4.  His North Bay Battalion will face Kingston in
the post-season.  While his counting numbers have not been very impressive, Liberati is playing top minutes for the top pairing on a strong possession team.
  • Kyle Pettit
did not play in a game this week.  While
the Otters are suffering from an outbreak of Chicken Pox,
Pettit did not play because he broke
his knuckle on his right hand.  He could
return at some point in the first round
    .  Erie
(56.602%) finished in 2nd in the OHL West and will face Sarnia
    (51.034%) in the post season.
  • Anton
Cederholm played in 3 more games this week scoring 1 assist, a -2 and earned 6
    PIMs.  The Winterhawks (50.378%) finished
second in their division and will face Seattle (50.417%) in the post-season.
  • MacKenze
Stewart played in the last 3 regular season games to earn a -2 and 9 PIMs.  Prince Albert did not make the post-season so
he could potentially join the Canucks, or more likely, the Utica Comets (but is
    unlikely to play).

  • Patrick McNally
continued to score despite missing so much time with an injury.  In 2 games, he scored 1 goal and 2 assists,
earned a +1 and 9 shots on goal.  Harvard
won the ECAC Mens Tournament and is playing the in NCAA Finals.  The McNally situation is going to be interesting as he could potentially leave school this summer (though he is eligible for a 5th year as he sat out a year).  Jason Botchford is not under the impression that the Canucks will even sign him.  McNally may choose the Justin Schultz route and allow himself to become a UFA by refusing to sign with Vancouver.  McNally is an interesting player, he had success right from being a freshman though he had two partial years due to the cheating scandal but came right back and dominated.  Also you need to keep in mind McNally is playing on a strong Harvard team (high Quality of Teammates) while he is older than most seniors, currently at 23.  McNally watch is on.  Here’s an interesting Crimson read on his return from injury.
  • Ben Hutton is
finished with the NCAA and is currently in Utica.  He has not yet played in a game.
  • Joseph LaBate
played in 1 game and earned 4 shots on goal to break the 100 shots mark.  Wisconsin was eliminated in the past week and
is done for the season.  As LaBate is a
senior the Canucks have 30 days from the time he leaves school to sign
him.  I would be pushing to do so now
before he leaves as a UFA.
  • Matthew Beattie
did not play a game this week (nor did Yale).
They were eliminated in the ECAC tournament but have earned a bid into
the NCAA finals and will play this weekend.
  • Mike Williamson
played in one game this past week.  Penn
State was eliminated this past week and is now finished for the season.

  • There’s been no news on Curtis Valk’s injury.
  • Ludwig Blomstrand played in 3 games this week scoring 4 goals but earning a -3.  He also notched 8 shots on goal.
  • Dane Fox played in 3 games and scored 1 assist.  He earned a -5 and found 9 shots on goal.
  • Jeremie Blain played in 1 game this week earning a +2, 2 shots on goal and 4 PIMs.
  • Patrick Kennedy played in 2 games this week with Kalamazoo scoring 1 goal, 1 assist, earning a +2, 6 shots on net and 2 PIMs.
  • Kane Lafranchise played in 3 games with Kalamazoo this week scoring 1 assist, earning a -4 and found 4 shots on goal.
  • Mitch Holmberg is still injured.
We are grateful to have another live scouting report from our KWings Insiderrr Sarah Hobday.  Give her a follow for all the latest in KWings news.
– Blomstrand had one of his best games on Friday – and not just because he scored 2 goals. He continues to impress me with his strong play on both ends of the ice.
– Blomstrand scored his team leading 29th goal of the season on Saturday. Following the game the Toledo goalie said that Blomstrand had a killer rocket of a shot and did not understand why he was not given a chance in the AHL.
– Blomstrand has had 18 goals in his last 18 games and 22 goals in his last 25 games.
– Lafranchise had an uncharacteristic weekend with less than stellar play in both games. He had times being caught out of position and missed assignments that led to some opponents scoring. He was on the ice for all 5 Toledo goals on Saturday.
– Fox struggled a bit this weekend. Fox was targeted and covered heavily by the other teams but again he kept his cool and did not retaliate. By the mid-point of the game Saturday he was moved from the 1st line to try to spark some offense.
– The Kzoo at Toledo game on Saturday was the first ECHL game since 30 March 2003 in which no penalties were called.
