Just one day removed from the 100th anniversary of this city’s last Stanley Cup, the Canucks looked to honour their Millionaire predecessors by donning their maroon regalia in front of the Rogers Arena faithful. The jerseys may have looked great, but that’s about all the Canucks had going for them tonight. They were out-shot mightily, surrendering 30-shots to the Colorado Avalanche before the 30-minute mark in tonight’s contest.
While they mounted a late push in the third, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Av’s mountainous lead. The Canucks would lose this one 4-1.
Lets break it down on the other side of the jump.

Highlights

Quick Hits

  • What is it with the Canucks and replacement level goaltenders? I mean, sure, they didn’t necessarily challenge Reto Berra much tonight, but on those rare occasions when they did, the Swiss national was up to the challenge. To put Berra’s general ineptitude in perspective, only five goaltenders have fared worse in terms of even strength Sv% in the last two seasons.
  • There’s something about these maroon jerseys that bring out the worst in the Canucks. They’ve now gone 0-3 in their Millionaire throwbacks, getting outscored 13-5 in the process. Not a particularly good look. It’s almost as though it’s the 1915 Millionaires themselves that are suiting up…
  • Don’t be surprised if Ronalds Kenins finds himself in the press box again. I don’t think he played particularly poor, but Willie Desjardins has shown a tendency to work the Latvian Locomotive with a short leash. Tonight the pesky Latvian took an ill-advised penalty and had a modest two-hits. More concerning would be the Corsi For of 35%. Are you ready for the return of local hero Brandon MacMillan?
  • Derek Dorsett had a really strong showing tonight. Being deployed primarily in the defensive zone, the pesky fourth line forward posted strong possession totals, spotting a Corsi For of 65%. The spark plug forward also had a hell of a tilt with Cody McLeod and a pair of hits to boot. One of the better efforts we’ve seen from Dorsett recently.
  • Yannick Weber added to his career high goal mark tonight, potting his ninth in the third period. It was the only Canucks goal on the night to boot. I’m starting to think the coaches are noticing too. Only Alex Edler had more ice-time among Canucks than Weber, who was out there for 22:09.

Conclusion

There wasn’t a ton to break down tonight as it was pretty simply a poor effort all around. Fortunately, the Canucks can get back to their winning ways as soon as Saturday. Unfortunately, they’ll play a Dallas Stars team whose speed seems to give them fits. Whatever happens, it should at least be entertaining.
