The marathon continues as the Canucks make their next stop on their Eastern road trip in Washington to take on the Capitals.
Spoiler alert: the Capitals are a very good hockey team. It’s once again that time of year where the #moralvictories pile up and the losses do too! The latest test for the Canucks will feature the Russian Brock Boeser, Alex Ovechkin.
Auston Matthews was the first real superstar comparison for Brock and the NHL took it well. Seeing yet another star get matched up to number six in white will bode well for him going forward.
The losses aren’t fun to watch but night in and night out the Boeser experience has been well worth it.

LINE COMBINATIONS
There shouldn’t be any significant changes up front but the defensive pairings could be shaken up. Adding Alex Biega’s feistiness could benefit the Canucks in a game where energy could reign supreme. At the same time, there are a few players that need to step up and create their own energy.
Does Jacob Markstrom regain his net for the Canucks? He needs to step up and get past the stigma of what has haunted that net for the last few months. Both goaltenders are vying for the backup spot because there is a realistic chance Thatcher Demko could make a charge for the number one spot by season’s end.

The line of T.J. Oshie, Lars Eller and Brett Connolly has clicked lately so they will stay together this evening. Again, there are no changes visible at this time. This bodes well for the Caps.
Brayden Holtby will most likely start.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • Connect four – The Capitals are winners of their last four, the Canucks are losers of their last four. There’s a clever comment to be made here but the Canucks don’t look all that promising to break anyone’s streak right now. Just get Brock the puck, let him score a goal and everyone can go home happy.
  • Loui Where-iksson? – Two assists in his last eight games. These are the only points that have shown he’s helping his team. All of Eriksson’s five goals came over a seven-day span in November. This isn’t ending anytime soon and according to some very knowledgeable people, no GM will trade for him. Imagine that?
  • Brendan Gaunce and Nic Dowd feel like non-factors these days. Travis Green seems to trust them more than anyone else in the third period and they’re seeing more ice time than some of the top players on the team. Jake Virtanen is a great choice to try out in these types of games regardless of the score and hey, he can score.
  • Safeway Score & Win Night – There have been some randomly eventful games this season and Brock Boeser has been involved in all of them. Could this be the night “The Flow” makes someone $1 million richer? No, it’s probably not. But, looking back at some historic nights for the Canucks, they happened away from Rogers Arena on the East Coast at 4 pm. Reaching? Yes. Bring on the Lagostina!
  • Alex Ovechkin leads the NHL this season with nine slap shot goals. If he gets a chance to wind up, 1/3 of his goals are scored. You’ve been warned.

MY 94 CENTS
The Canucks held their own the last time these two teams met with a stunning 6-2 victory in Vancouver. There were a lot of things that went the Canucks way in that one but it was a win any way you look at it. The shoe is on the other foot this evening and Washington will be out for blood. A spectacular goaltending performance will be the starting point if the Canucks feel they can pull another one off.
Alex Ovechkin would also need to see Erik Gudbranson’s best game ever.
OVER / UNDER
Loui Eriksson goal (+/- 0.5)     Here is the lock of the year, folks! Eriksson will not score in this game thus making the under a very tasty treat. There is a better chance I get called up through a ridiculously random, insane odds contest and a puck goes off my butt and in. The sheer amount of thought it took to come up with that scenario just shows how unlikely it will be that Loui scores this evening.
Jake Virtanen shifts in the 3rd period (+/- 3)     Ugh, it’s not going to happen, is it? It’s not. Take the under. Really sorry, I am.
