Canucks Army GDT #40 – Canucks vs. Flames
alt
Rhys Jessop
Jan 10, 2015, 15:40 ESTUpdated:
After being shut down by Roberto Luongo and the Florida Panthers on Thursday, the Vancouver Canucks will look to get back on track tonight on Hockey Night in Canada. And there’s no better opponent to get back on track against than the Calgary Flames; a team that Vancouver has defeated 9 straight times overall, and 8 consecutive times in the friendly confines of Rogers Arena. Calgary will be looking to keep their grasp in the last wild card spot in the west though, so it’s sure to be a good game.

Head to Head

Storylines

  • Firefighters – The Vancouver Canucks have defeated the Calgary Flames nine consecutive times, and are 8-0-0 at home against their Alberta rivals since March 31st, 2012. Henrik Sedin has 15 points in his last 11 games against Calgary, while Vancouver has held the dynamic Flames duo of Mark Giordano and TJ Brodie off the scoresheet. In a combined 19 career games, the D pair has just two points – both courtesy of Giordano. They’ll look to continue this dominance and push the winning streak to 10 games tonight.
  • Flaming Out – After a red hot start to the year, fueled by hard work and the leadership of Bob Hartley and not by unsustainable percentages in any way we’ll have you know, Calgary has cooled off significantly of late, and are losing ground in the Pacific division playoff race. They now sit just two points up on Dallas for the final playoff spot in the West, having lost 6 of their last 10 games, and five of their last 6 on the road. Most of this was expected due to their woeful possession numbers, and it would not be at all surprising if this was just the beginning of a season-long slump.
  • Corrado to Debut? – Since Dan Hamhuis went down with a lower body injury, the same six defensemen have taken the ice for the Canucks in every game since: Alex Edler, Chris Tanev, Kevin Bieksa, Yannick Weber, Luca Sbisa, and Ryan Stanton. The results have been significantly less than desirable as well, as Stanton and Sbisa in particular have struggled, while Bieksa hasn’t been good either. Should Corrado make his season debut tonight, it will likely be at the expense of Yannick Weber though, as both are right handed shots, and there’s no way that the Canucks would healthy scratch Kevin Bieksa.
