CANUCKS ARMY GDT# 13 – CANUCKS VS. PENGUINS

Well, well, well, the Pittsburgh Penguins are in the building. It would be easy to put all the hype about Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin playing tonight, but let’s be serious; NICK BONINO is back in town and Brandon Sutter is playing his former team. That’s the story right there! Word on the street is rugged winger Chris Higgins will make his season debut and that’s just jazzy! The Canucks did well against the Pens last year shutting them out twice (3-0 in PIT, 5-0 in VAN). Hey Sid, don’t quit your day job. (Its Tim Hortons drive thru, in case you’re wondering)

LINEUPS

Lots of changes tonight: Looks like Higgins is back in but Willie makes that call I suppose, Hamhuis is obviously back and Sbisa is still walking in a boot. Markstrom is skating and looks like he’ll be back soon and Prust is out for awhile. Would like to see Brendan Gaunce back in. Have to wait on that.
Ryan Miller is the starter. He’s earned every minute this year.
Injuries are sweeping the league right now and the Penguins are not immune; Chris Kunitz is questionable and on a non-injury related note, Adam Clendening has not played this year. Hopefully, he gets a chance to play at home. Hopefully Malkin feels the shame of injuring Willie Mitchell many moons ago and offers his body as a target for Virtanen.
Marc Andre Fleury will man the Pens net.

REASONS TO WATCH THIS GAME

  • Watching the Canucks young guns dismantle the lowly Flyers was great. If they can do the same to the Penguins; that’s even better. I’ve dubbed this “The Kids vs. The Kid” Its fitting, not original but fitting.
  • Chris Higgins would love to get back against a solid Penguins roster and the team looks slightly different then the last time he laced up his skates. Whether it be McCann and Dorsett as linemates or Sutter and Virtanen, he’ll be able to make a difference. We miss ya Higgy!
  • We finally saw a Jake Virtanen goal and it was a beauty. We also saw a fantastic Bo Horvat goal and that was equally awesome. So now, what’s the next thing we all long for? Maybe Ben Hutton unloading from the blue line? Yes. Yes, that would make us happy.
  • Phil Kessel is a Penguin now and he will definitely hear the boos. I think. Do we even care anymore about this guy? Last picked in an All-Star game draft, sent away from TORONTO??? It’s over, Phil.
  • After playing in his 700th NHL game, Alex Burrows is on to the next one. He’s been a great addition to the Horvat line with Hansen as well. This team is loaded with 2nd/3rd line talent which means the minutes are spread around. Burrows can get back to being the player he has thrived at being.
  • The “Mc” that DIDN’T go hard into the boards vs. the Flyers (McCann) will try and bring his team-leading goal total of 5 to 6 against the Penguins. The way he’s playing right now, I’d probably add a 7th while you’re at it. Did someone say Calder? It’s early I agree but this is a Canucks site and we need to support our own.
  • None of our first round picks are out with a broken clavicle so make sure to tune in and see how good our young guys are. None of them are being heralded as the next Crosby, none of them have to live in what one person described as “that smell that grosses you out at the dump”, and as far as I know none of them are getting machine gun redialed by Mark Messier. I guess you could say things are alright in Vancouver.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

MY TAKE

The Penguins used to be so awesome. Crosby just owned the league and he had some pretty impressive games here in Vancouver but now, they’re just hanging around. The Canucks have really stepped their game up and I’m calling this one: Canucks victory, Higgins scores, and Ryan Miller gets a chance to even the score from 2010. Okay, the last one won’t ever happen but Miller will once again be lights out.
