Looks like there could be some Vancouver Canucks representation at the upcoming World Championships after all.
In an interview on Tuesday morning’s edition of Donnie and Dhali, Pittsburgh Penguins and Team Canada General Manager Kyle Dubas said that Rick Tocchet, Jake DeBrusk, and Tyler Myers are all on the radar for the Canadians heading into this year’s Worlds.
Under head coach Jon Cooper of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Rick Tocchet served as assistant coach for Team Canada at February’s 4 Nations Face-Off alongside the Ottawa Senators’ Bruce Cassidy and the Dallas Stars’ Peter DeBoer and Misha Donskov. With all four of those coaches now playoff bound, that leaves Tocchet as the obvious candidate to lead Canada as they look to top last year’s fourth place finish, but Dubas confirmed discussions still need to be had with the Canucks’ head coach regarding his spring plans.
“Obviously he’s one of the top coaches in the league and did a great job for us at the 4 Nations Face-Off and we regard him very highly,” said Dubas. “So we’ll see where he’s at when the year ends, what he has on the go, and whether he can fully jump into it.”
Dubas confirmed that Jake DeBrusk and Tyler Myers are both being considered for the team as well, but there are still decisions to be made, especially with regard to the injured Myers.
“Both players are firmly on the radar,” said Dubas. “We will continue to evaluate them here in the last couple of days before we have to start putting out invites and getting guys locked into the team.”
Having never appeared on the international stage, DeBrusk would no doubt be a strong addition for the Canadians. With four goals in his last four games, he’s officially set a career high in tucks with a team-leading 28 this season. On the blue line, Myers would be a force for Canada if he is healthy. The 6’8″, 229 lb., defenceman most recently appeared with Team Canada at the 2023 World Championships, where they won gold. Myers had one goal through 10 games played.
Meanwhile, it has already been confirmed that Thatcher Demko and Quinn Hughes will not appear for Team USA at the upcoming tournament, with both players hoping to get some rest after an injury-ridden season. Both Canucks’ stars were injured and absent from the American roster for February’s 4 Nations Face-Off.
