Henrik and Daniel caught the league by storm when they announced their plan to retire at the end of the season. Twitter was flooding with fans, players, journalists and media pouring out congratulatory messages, unique stories and thanks to the twins. With three games left on the Canucks’ schedule, people were quick to react. Fans coughed up their money to attend one of their last two home games, purchased Sedin jerseys and memorabilia, and went above and beyond to make sure their voices were heard using #ThankYouSedins. It was emotional, exciting, nostalgic, and community-building. It certainly brought out shades of 2011.
That said, let’s take a look back at the week that was… Daniel and Henrik’s final 7 days in the NHL.
  • Tuesday vs. Las Vegas wasn’t an ordinary game, no matter how much the twins wanted it to be:
  • People say the NHL is one of, if not the, classiest professional sports leagues in the world. The Vegas Golden Knights set the standard for Arizona and Edmonton, who the Canucks were set to face in their final two games:
  • The Canucks dig into the archives in finding footage of the twins’ first visit to Vancouver in 1999. Daniel and Henrik, with an old-school camera in hand, got their first glimpse of what would be their long-term home:
  • Thursday: the last home game. Canucks TV was able to tag along in Henrik’s Tesla (bonus point for driving an electric vehicle!) for their last drive to the rink:
  • Hours before they’d step on the ice for their final home game, Daniel and Henrik walked into Rogers Arena looking suave as always:
  • As part of the “Every Kid’s Dream” opportunity that the Canucks offer each game, one lucky girl got the chance to skate out and stand between the twins in their final game on home ice. This was quite a precious moment:
  • Their kids were shown on the jumbotron during the game. Daniel was pretty happy about it, saying “I saw our kids up on the jumbotron during the game and smiled. I knew we made the right decision.” If he’s happy, we’re happy.
  • Going into the third period, Johnny Canuck and the crowd brought out the Viking Clap, which Henrik once pointed out would be cool if it happened. They got their wish and, as someone who was in the stands, it was pretty awesome:
  • and then… it happened. The game couldn’t have been scripted any better:
  • Canucks TV had the twins mic’d up throughout the game, from the start of the anthems to their final walk off the ice:
  • Daniel was happy with the outcome:
  • Henrik was as well:
  • Friday: their last road trip. It looks like a Swedish media outlet sent out a crew to capture the moments:
How I imagined this photo being taken:
  • “Kids, why don’t you go take a picture in front of that plane?”
  • “Mom, this is so embarrassing!”
  • From their arrival until the very end, the Edmonton Oilers showed nothing but class towards the twins. As a congratulatory gift, the organization gave them custom engraved wine bottles:

  • And then at the end of the game, emotions were certainly flowing:
