The St. Louis Blues are a full seven points ahead of the pack for the best record in the Western Conference at 27-10-7. The defending Stanley Cup champions will once again be the team to beat out West in 2020.
St. Louis is a +425 favourite on the odds to win the Western Conference at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Last year, the Blues hit the halfway mark of the 2018-19 season with a 17-20-4 record before hitting their stride with an 11-game winning streak in February. This year’s team will need no late-season heroics; they are a well-oiled machine that ranks third in the West in goals against (2.68) and fourth in the conference in scoring with 3.14 goals per game.
The only other team in the Western Conference that ranks in the top four in both goals for and goals against is the Colorado Avalanche (+450 to win the West at online betting sites). Nathan MacKinnon’s 26 goals and 39 assists lead the way on an Avalanche attack that averages 3.61 goals per game while the team’s defence gives up only 2.93 goals per game. Colorado has the youngest team in the NHL, and this could be the season everything finally comes together.
While the Avalanche have the best offence in the West, the Dallas Stars (+750) have the best defence allowing only 2.43 goals per game. Dallas opened the season with a 1-7-1 slump but has been consistently strong since then with a 23-7-3 record over its last 33 games. The Stars pushed St. Louis to double-overtime in Game 7 in the second round last postseason.
Over in the Pacific Division, five teams are separated by only four points. The Vegas Golden Knights (+600) and the Arizona Coyotes (+850) are leading the way with 54 points, but the Edmonton Oilers (+1200), Calgary Flames (+1600), and Vancouver Canucks (+1500) are all still well within striking distance. Vancouver has two games in hand on the other four teams in this group and has the best home record in the Pacific Division at 14-5-3.
Rounding out the NHL odds to win the Western Conference are the Nashville Predators (+1400), Winnipeg Jets (+1400), Minnesota Wild (+1800), San Jose Sharks (+3500), Chicago Blackhawks (+4000), Anaheim Ducks (+7000), and Los Angeles Kings (+10000). Nashville fired head coach Peter Laviolette this week in an attempt to provide the team with a second-half spark.
