UPDATE 4:21 PM
According to multiple sources, the Canucks have traded JT Miller, Erik Brännstrom, and prospect Jackson Dorrington to the New York Rangers in exchange for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a protected first rounder. The Canucks are not retaining any salary on Miller’s deal, according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.
ORIGINAL STORY:
It looks like forward JT Miller’s time with the Vancouver Canucks is coming to an end.
Late Friday afternoon, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that talks between the Canucks and New York Rangers for Miller were “intensifying.” Minutes later, CHEK TV’s Rick Dhaliwal reported that Miller would be scratched for the Canucks’ game against the Dallas Stars. Dhaliwal also reported that Miller had officially been asked to waive his no-movement clause and said yes.
Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli also reported that other Canucks pieces and prospects are going with Miller to the Rangers as part of a package.
Miller has been in trade rumours all season long, and it appears to have reached a boiling point with Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford not only acknowledging the rift between Miller and Elias Pettersson, but stating that there is “no path forward” for the Canucks with this current core.
“I felt like for a long time that there was a solution here because everybody has worked on it, including the parties involved,” Rutherford said. “But it only gets resolved for a short period of time and then it festers again and so it certainly appears like there’s not a good solution that would keep this group together.”
The details of the trade package involving Miller that the Canucks are sending the Rangers aren’t yet known, and neither is the package that the Canucks will be getting from the Rangers. According to Seravalli, the deal is done and the trade call is in the work.
We will be sure to update this story as more information becomes available.
Miller, 32, is in year two of a seven-year deal the Canucks signed him to in September 2022. Originally acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning ahead of the 2019-20 season, the best years of Miller’s career from a statistical perspective, at least, were spent in Vancouver. Through 404 games with the Canucks, Miller has tallied 437 of his 647 career points with the Canucks.
More to come.
