Vancouver will suit up with one of the most impressive groups of young budding stars in the league when the team opens their 2019/20 schedule on Wednesday, October 2 with a game against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.
The Canucks’ talented young corps is led by last season’s Calder Trophy winner Elias Pettersson. The 20-year-old will be looking to build on an impressive 66-point debut, and will be key to Vancouver’s chances of returning to the NHL postseason.
Pettersson is joined by forward Bo Horvat, who is coming off a career-best 61-point campaign, and top defensive prospect Quinn Hughes, who is expected to take on a regular role on the team’s blue line in his first full NHL season.
However, the team still has work to do to get restricted free agent Brock Boeser signed to a new contract. The 22-year-old winger piled up 111 points over his first two NHL seasons, but has been plagued by injuries that have limited him to just 131 total games during that stretch.
And while the addition of veterans like forward Micheal Ferland and rearguards Tyler Myers and Jordie Benn are expected to help lift this club to the next level, the Canucks still face a monumental task in their bid to return to Stanley Cup contention.
The Canucks find themselves facing an uphill task to crack the top three in the Pacific Division, where the Vegas Golden Knights lead the way as short +125 favourites on those NHL odds, ahead of the Calgary Flames, who return to action as a +400 wager on those divisional odds after finishing atop the Western Conference standings last season.
In addition to the San Jose Sharks, the Canucks must also compete with an improved Arizona Coyotes team, and lag well back on the odds to win the Pacific Division at +1200. Not surprisingly, the Canucks also face long +2500 odds to claim their first Western Conference title since 2011, and find themselves near the bottom of the Stanley Cup odds as a +5000 bet.
