Throwback Thursday: This week in 2000, Vancouver Canucks acquire Brendan Morrison

This week in 2000, the Vancouver Canucks acquired Brendan Morrison and Denis Pederson from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Alexander Mogilny.

In Mogilny, the Canucks gave up a player who scored 308 points in 312 games for the club for two relative unknowns at the time. Mogilny, 30 at the time of the deal, had struggled to stay healthy in his time in Vancouver but was super productive when he was. His four-and-a-half-year stint included a 55 goal, 107 points 79-game season in 1995-96.

Despite still being an unknown, Morrison became a staple in the Canucks lineup for a long time. Morrison ended up playing eight years with the Canucks scoring 393 points in 543 games. He helped form the “West Coast Express” line alongside Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi, where he put up three straight 60-point seasons.

Morrison left the Canucks in free agency to join the Anaheim Ducks in 2008.

Pederson, meanwhile, never quite got the foothold in Vancouver Morrison did. He ended up playing 271 games scoring 93 points for the Canucks. He was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in a package that included Drake Berehowsky wherein the Canucks got back Tyler Bouck, Trevor Letowski, Todd Warriner, and a 2003 third-round pick (Dimitri Pestunov).
