The history the Vancouver Canucks have against the San Jose Sharks is far from favorable, which might override the Sharks’ seemingly coasting to the finish line of the regular season.
The Canucks are the +130 home underdog (bet $100 to win $130) on the NHL betting lines for Tuesday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com, while the Sharks are a -150 road favorite (bet $150 to win $100), with a 6.0-goal total.
The Canucks are 1-12 in their last 13 games against San Jose and are also 3-7 in their last 10 games as an underdog at home. Something will have to give, as the Sharks are 1-7 in their last eight games as a moneyline favorite of at least -140 or deeper into minus money.
San Jose, which sits in second place in the Pacific Division, is 3-0 against Vancouver this season. In the most recent meeting on February 16, the Sharks won 3-2 on home ice, with Brock Boeser and Antoine Roussel scoring for Vancouver.
The Canucks are coming off a 3-2 shootout win against the Dallas Stars in their most recent outing on Saturday. Sven Baertschi and Tim Schaller scored for Vancouver, while Jacob Markstrom made 38 saves to force the game to the shootout.
The Sharks are 2-8 in their last 10 games and this is their first outing since a loss against the Calgary Flames on Sunday that decided the race for first in the Pacific Division. Six of San Jose’s last 10 games have finished OVER, according to the OddsShark NHL Database, with an average total of 7.3 goals. If the Canucks, who have had the total go UNDER in five of their last six games as a home underdog, start well and frustrate San Jose like they did against Dallas, there is a chance of pulling an upset.
So much of that will depend on Markstrom. The Canucks goalie is 5-7-2 with a 3.53 goals-against average and .879 save percentage on two days’ rest this season, and trend-minded bettors could hardly be blamed if they seized on that split stat to bank on San Jose continuing its dominance of the Canucks.
The Canucks are 24th in the NHL in goal scoring, averaging 2.7 goals per game, while the Sharks are fourth, averaging 3.5. Vancouver has the NHL’s 27th-ranked power play (16.0 percent) and 10th-ranked penalty kill (81.2). San Jose has the sixth-ranked power play (24.0  percent) and 18th-ranked penalty kill (80.2).
The Canucks will wrap up their season on the road against playoff-bound teams, visiting the Nashville Predators on Thursday and the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. The Sharks visit the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday before hosting the Colorado Avalanche to end off their regular season.
