Plays of the Week: January 1st, 2017

It looks like the Christmas break was well-needed and well-received by the Canucks this year. Looking for a fresh start from their up-and-down first half, the team benefitted from the extra sleep, family time, and yummy food.
It was an encouraging week for the Canucks as they came out on top in each of their three games this week. Henrik Sedin inches closer and closer to his 1,000-point milestone, while Bo Horvat has started a 3-game point streak. With that being said, let’s dive in to successful the week that was.

Canucks Army This Week
“While the Canucks will only be sending two of their youngsters to the WJC, the other Pacific Division teams’ prospects will be accounting for 17 of the tournament’s players.”
“Fans and media won’t hear them – at least not right now – as Tryamkin’s limited English prevents him from doing interviews for public consumption. But it appears Tryamkin’s personality is emerging a little more every day and teammates say they’re doing all they can to make the 22-year-old feel as much a part of the group as possible.”
“The Canucks’ first line was supposed to be an area of relative strength. At the very least, one couldn’t count it among the multitude question marks hanging over the roster. Whether Loui Eriksson worked out or not, the Sedins moulded Hansen as a safety blanket in their image for the club’s cover.”
“Controlling the flow of play is often an area where young players, and rookies in particular struggle most. Small picture, the Canucks have to be encouraged by Stecher’s showing; big picture, it has to be relieving that second-year defender Tryamkin is right alongside him.”
THE GAMES
“As far as level playing fields go, the Canucks aren’t going to find one much better than tonight. And to their credit, they took full advantage. Vancouver built an early lead and battened down the hatches.”
“Tonight was Alex Burrows’ 800th NHL game, making him just the 6th player to reach that mark with the Canucks. Considering that Burrows never played major junior until the age of 19, went undrafted, and played in the ECHL, that’s astounding. Burrows has been in the headlines a lot over the course of his career- often for the wrong reasons- but in the end, he’s getting the last laugh.”
