Earlier this season, Seattle Kraken fan Nadia Popovici saved the life of Vancouver Canucks equipment manager Brian “Red” Hamilton.
While sitting behind the Canucks’ bench at Climate Pledge Arena, Popovici managed to attract Hamilton’s attention and informed him of the potentially dangerous nature of a mole on the back of his neck.
After further consultation with the Canucks’ team doctors, Hamilton had the mole — which turned out to be a malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer — successfully removed.
“The words out of the doctor’s mouth were if I ignored that for four to five years, I wouldn’t be here,” said Hamilton. “I didn’t know it was there, she pointed it out — how she saw it boggles my mind. It wasn’t very big, I wear a jacket, I wear a radio on the back of my jacket so hooks and chords are there — like, she’s a hero. I wish she was sitting here so that you guys could talk to her about what a great human being she is.”
Popovici met up with Hamilton in Seattle on Jan. 1, with the Canucks and Kraken jointly pledging a $10,000 scholarship to help Popovici attend medical school.
On Monday night, the pair met again — and this time, Hamilton brought a pair of guests.
Henrik and Daniel Sedin presented Popovici with her own personalized Canucks jersey (autographed by both of them).
Coincidentally, Popovici attended Monday’s game wearing a Henrik Sedin jersey — so, of course, Henrik took the opportunity to sign that, too. It was yet another night that both Popovici and Hamilton will never forget.
The Canucks played against the Kraken at Rogers Arena on Monday evening, with the home side emerging victorious by a 5–2 score.
