Luke Schenn clobbers Jakob Chychrun to set new career NHL hits record

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Luke Schenn set a new NHL record for most hits in a career late in the third period of Saturday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes.

Schenn, 33, threw the 2,947th hit of his 15-season NHL career against Coyotes defenceman Jakob Chychrun to pass Brooks Orpik for first place all-time since the NHL started tracking hits.

Schenn led the Canucks with six hits during Saturday’s game against the Coyotes. The 6’2″, 226-pound right-handed defenceman already has 107 hits in just 25 games with the Canucks this season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs originally selected Schenn in the first round (No. 5 overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft. He spent four seasons with the Maple Leafs before being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for James van Riemsdyk in 2012; since then, Schenn has played for the Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes, Anaheim Ducks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Canucks (twice).

In 888 career NHL games with seven different teams, Schenn has scored 40 goals and 177 points to go along with his 2,947 hits. Entering Saturday’s game, Schenn had two goals and eight points while averaging 17:43 in 24 games with Vancouver in 2022–23.

The Canucks defeated the Coyotes 3–2 in overtime on Saturday, with team captain Bo Horvat tipping in the game-winning goal past Karel Vejmelka off a Quinn Hughes slap shot from the point.
