Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes lost out to Colorado Avalanche blueliner Cale Makar for the Calder Trophy last season, and he also finds himself trailing him on the odds to win the Norris Trophy in the season ahead at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Hughes put up 53 points in 68 contests for the Canucks as a rookie last season, three more than Makar but in 11 more games. And Hughes then piled up the points during Vancouver’s time in the NHL playoff bubble, scoring twice and adding 14 assists in 17 contests. That has the 21-year-old listed at +1600 on the Norris Trophy odds for 2021 at sports betting sites, with Makar slightly ahead at +1400 on that board. Makar picked up 15 points in 15 playoff games.
Both of those second-year players, however, trail the favorites on the Norris Trophy odds heading into the season, with Roman Josi set as +400 chalk. Josi had 65 points in 69 games for the Nashville Predators last season, earning him his first ever Norris Trophy. The Washington Capitals’ John Carlson, who led all blueliners with 75 points last season, is next at +500 on those odds; Carlson was the runner-up to Josi in the award voting last season.
Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning is then third at +550 odds, after finishing third in Norris Trophy voting last season. Hedman won the award back in 2017/18, and also won the Conn Smythe Trophy with the Lightning last year after scoring 10 goals in 25 playoff games.
Two other former Norris Trophy winners then follow on the odds, with Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks at +800 and teammate Erik Karlsson at +900. Burns won the award in 2016/17, while Karlsson won in both 2011/12 and 2014/15. Alex Pietrangelo, now with the Vegas Golden Knights, joins Makar, Torey Krug, Seth Jones, and Morgan Rielly at +1400 on those NHL odds, with Kris Letang tied with Hughes at +1600 odds.
